Robert Charlton - b Ashington ca 1909
« on: Thursday 25 June 09 19:44 UTC (UK) »

I am searching for the ancestors of the Robert Charlton who married Elizabeth Milburn in 1934.

On the marriage certificate in 1934 he gave his name as Robert Charlton ( no middle initial ) his age as 25 and his father as Robert Charlton (deceased). He was living in Ashiongton at the time of his marriage.

I have looked in the 1911 census for Robert Charlton's born ca 1909 living with fathers also called Robert. I find none in Ashington but a few elewhere around Newcastle.

Has anyone any further info on this?

thanks & regards

Paul,

In your post title you quote Robert as born in Ashington.

In your message you say Robert was living in Ashington at the time of his marriage in 1934.

So was he born in Ashington ?  Have you traced the registration of his birth
( for Ashington-born, registration would have been with Morpeth Registration District).

What was Robert jnr's mother's name ?

michael, robert and elizabeth were the parents two famous ashington footballers. numerous books have been published about the charlton/milburn families and are easy to come by.  pete

Pete

Yes but the references I have seen all talk about Cissie's ancestry not Robert's and it's a link into his family I'm looking for. Do you know anything about his ancestry?

thanks

 Paul,

So do you not know whether Robert was born in Ashington or not ?

One of the disadvantages of "doing" the famous is that there is so much written about them, not necessarily all spot-on.  Even the famous would have been recorded on censuses, in church records, BMD registrations etc

Michael

I do not know whether he was born in Ashington - just that he was living there when he married in 1934 and lived there the rest of his life.

IF he gave the correct age on his marriage certificate then he was born ca 1909. There are however no births of a Robert Charlton registered in Morpeth around this time ( there is a Robert England Charlton but his father is a Matthew) - also when I look in the 1911 census then there are no Roberts living in Ashington with fathers called Robert.

Looking wider afield in 1911 around Newcastle I do find Roberts with fathers called Robert but I dont really know enough to be able to identify the right family.

So I was hoping to find someone who knew something else about this Robert Charlton ( mother's name? siblings?) that could give me a steer. Then I may finally be able to work out whether my family Charltons are related to them ( as some insist) or not ( as I believe)

best wishes

I know a Charlton cousin of the famous two and he just told me a few months ago that he seemed to remember the Charltons came from Earsdon. Whether that is Earsdon north of Morpeth or Earsdon Newcastle I have no idea, but it may be a lead.

ok, so not newcastle itself but further North:

Earsdon, a parish comprising the townships of Backworth, Blyth and Newsham, Burradon, Earsdon, Hartley, Holywell, Seaton Delaval, and Sighill, is bounded on the north by Bedlingtonshire, on the west by Long Benton, Cramlington, and Horton, on the south by Tynemouth, and on the east by the German Ocean.

Thought it was the North Sea, I am not sure when the name changed though but more and more use of name North Sea in latter 19th century

John Gibson 1901 census enumerator, and many of his colleagues who enumerated coastal "pieces" in Northumberland, used the term " German Sea" for the boundaries in their District Descriptions ( e.g. 4839-52-1 for Amble )

I am unable to see term what 1911 enemerators used ?

Maybe the Brits took the sea off them after WW1 (only a wee joke)
