I would like to find some record of my grand uncle Thomas Rodgers who was in the Leinster Regiment in WW1 and was in France. That is all I know except that he then emigrated to Australia after the war.
How would I find his records WW1?
Thanks Lucy

Thank you so much Grandarog!! It is definitely him, that was the street they lived in!
I am so pleased that there is a record of him in the Leinster Regiment, as he later went to Australia, and went missing in 1941. The family felt some ill must have befallen him, as nobody ever knew what happened. He was single and about 44 years old at the time, and had enlisted in Hay NSW.
I am wondering where I can access his WW1 records, and maybe even a photo, I am hoping.
He also had a brother James Rodgers who was a soldier in 1912 in Belfast. He married a Catherine McGivern, and I think he was killed in the war. He was possibly a seaman.
They were my grandfather's brothers. The family were orphaned of both parents in 1904 (TB), leaving 5 young sons. It seems they went on to have a tough life.
Any information I could get on Thomas or James would be wonderful.
Thank you so much for looking for me!
Lucy

The MIC shows that your man served in the Royal Iniskilling Fusiliers and then in the Leinster Regiment. He qualified for the usual Victory and British War Medals, also for the Imperial General Service Medal (IGSM). This was awarded between 1908 and 1935 and in his case was for service at Malabar, which must have been in 1921-2, while in the Leinster Regt. Their full title was 'Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians)' and they were disbanded in 1922. This will give you a bit more to chew on! The 'Canadian' part of the title goes back a long way and does not suggest any connection with your man. A

Ken
Rog's link was to a search result and the session has a limited "life" and cannot be looked at later.
Lucy,
You will need to go to http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx and select Namesearch, enter a surname and category i.e. World War II to find him. You can refine the search using his first name at the next stage. You can also try the Australian War Memorial under Biographical Databases and Collections for things such as his entry on the nominal roll - http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/script/veteran.asp?ServiceID=A&VeteranID=317773 - and his unit's war diary etc

Ainsley, Km and Rog, thank you all very much for that information. It is highly appreciated.
I am trying to solve a long time family mystery of what happened to Thomas in Australia. He went missing in 1941 from the Australian army. The family felt something bad had befallen him, they could never find him, and there is no record of his death. He was single and about 44 yrs old at the time. His brother, my grandfather Edward, did request a search done, with no results. I suppose resources were very limited in 1941. I have received great help on the Australia thread of this forum too. I have already got the 4 page record from his time in Hay. Sadly it says he was reprimanded for being 'drunk' and then AWL. So there were problems.
Any information I can gather may help me piece it together, and his WW1 records would be very interesting. It now gives me a rough date of emigration, and perhaps I could find his shipping records, and maybe names of friends he travelled with. It is a long shot, but feasable that someone in their 20's in Hay in 1941, would still be alive and maybe remember him? Many Many thanks once again to all three of you for your time and kind advice!

Hello In spite of everyones help I am still a little confused about how to obtain the WW1 British army records! I have downloaded and filled in the search form, and next of kin declaration form. This morning I rang the helpline for army records, and the person there advised me that they were available on 'ancestry'. I was about to send 30 sterling pounds to Kew. It seems as if it is only the medal cards that are on ancestry? I already have that thanks to kind people on here. There is a date of 1925 on Thomas' medal cards, so now I do not know where to apply for the records. There seems to be two choices - Kew, or the Historical Division which has no email or contact phone number. Any advice would be great - thank you.
