connecting bakers
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 17:09 UTC (UK) »

i was wondering if anyone can help me connect two lots of baker ancestors. i have in my tree ruth baker born c1850 stelling minnis, kent, died 1929,gravel walk, ashford.she married thomas rossiter from bethersden, kent on 10th march 1868.ruths siblings were john, william, elery, mercy, george, stephen, and eliza, born between 1846 and 1866 in different kent locations.theirparents were john baker born c1824 kent,hawker/horse dealer and mercy barton born c1830 hythe, kent.they married 04 october 1853 peamarsh, rye, sussex.witnesses to the marriage were james and margaret baker.johns parents were william baker born c1796 aylesford,kent,labourer/hawker and katherine unknown. the other bakers im looking at are louisa born 1841 barham nr canterbury,general/timber/pig dealer/bobbing maker.her parents were james baker born 1801 canterbury, wood dealer and margaret unknown born c1803 sutton,kent.hawker.louisa had an older brother born c1826 place unknown and unknown partner.they had a son, louisas nephew, who married naomi todd born 1850 canterbury, hawker.i believe they had 8 children, all born stelling minnis.i believe that given the occupations they had in common, and shared places of birth, that they are related, and the james and margaret baker who witnessed john and mercys wedding were louisa and unknowns parents.the problem is,what was the relationship?given johns birthdate of 1824,and james of 1801,they could be brothers.equally, with john born 1824 and louisa born 1841,they could potentially be siblings.any help and additional info would be greatly appreciated, thanks, nel.

I had a look at some of these BAKERs too but couldn't get a birthplace for John BAKER (husband of Mercy BARTON) - what is your source for him being born/baptised in Aylesford son of William & Catherine Nel Huh

hi Andrew, ive had a look through some indexes but no sign of either. you would get some good information from the marriage certificate. you will need the registration no to be able to order it but you can visit a local registry service office where they may be able to help.
You will also get more interest if you open your own thread with the baker/davey as a subject heading.
good luck. shane.

Yes, that's what I thought too Andrew hence my moving the original post that you tagged on here to a topic of it's own - it can now be found here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,380180.0.html

Certainly Ruth is baptised at Lyminge 1850 along with sister Matilda.  The IGI http://www.familysearch.org says dau of John and Mary but it is very easy to transcribe Mercy as Mary so it could just be that they had several children before marriage - quite common in travelling families.

Hi, i just recieved john and mercys marriage certificate and cant make out johns fathers name, does any one know if these details will be online somewhere, married 04 oct 1853 in parish church, peasmarsh. witnesses james and margaret baker, hoping james was his brother, this might help track down baptism or early census.
thanks, shane.

Hi Shane

Can you scan or even close-up photo the portion of the marriage certificate with the name that you can't make out and post it here or on the "Deciphering Help" board here on Rootschat http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,425.0.html where others will have a go at reading it?
