Hi Nel

Definitely yes. Gray/Grey is one of the principal British Gypsy surnames, alongside the likes of Smith, Lee, Cooper, Boswell etc.

There are lots of people posting messages on this site who have Gray ancestry or interests.

Are you looking at a particular part of the country? I have many Gray references for the eastern counties.

hello sharon, many thanks for that.the grey marriage im looking at was in swansea in 1916,but im not sure if hes from there.his name was albert edward grey.he married elizabeth spain in swansea.she was the daughter of william george spain who was a horse dealer.i came across williams grave by chance at a recent family funeral, its quite impressive, about six foot tall with a statue of a horse on top with its head hung in mourning.there is a very nice verse which goes :when in my health i little thought, the time was come so near, that i should leave all earthly friends, that were to me so dear.be warned then by my sudden call, for death you must prepare, the time will come you know not when, the manner how or where.it then says sacred to the memory of our dear parents albert edward and elizabeth grey and says it was erected by his only devoted daughter e grey.ive ordered albert and elizabeths marriage cert to see what that says.albert might not be a traveller at all,but the fact they erected such an impressive memorial made me wonder.if you know of any greys in wales, maybe into horse dealing,id be grateful, thanks, nel.

hello,i got this marriage certificate today, and it seems to provide more questions than answers;there are things that dont really seem to add up.it tells me that albert edward grey married elizabeth spain on 1st november 1916.he was 20 years old,a batchelor and a horse dealer, living in swansea.his father was william henry grey, also a horse dealer, same address given, then crossed out.her father was william george spain, also a horse dealer,no address given.the witnesses were l m taylor,r tullet,w grey and w g spain.ive found a william grey born 1871 swansea on 1901,married to winifred with son albert born 1897 swansea,no occupations given.on the 1891,theres a william grey born 1869,street,somerset whose father is john grey born 1851 glastonbury, hes a horse dealer, mother is ann born victor,somerset.2 of williams younger brothers born swansea.on the 1881 theres john born 1845 glastonbury, general haulier, wife jane m born pilton, and kids.on the 1871 i cant find john or william, but there is an archibald grey born 1846 glastonbury, wife anna m,and first three kids same names and ages as john.on the 1861 theres an archibald born 1850,father john thomas grey born 1805 london.the 1851 shows archibald, and his father john is a retired police officer.there is a birth for an archibald grey j/f/m 1850 wells.theres also a john grey a/m/j 1843 wells.theres also a death for an archibald grey 1849 wells.forward again to the 1901 theres archibald grey born 1853 glastonbury, horse dealer married to mary ann hambleton(two stepdaughters indicate this).the 1891 shows me she was previously married to charles hambleton,a fairground traveller and they were in caravans.isnt it a bit unusual that the son and grandson of a policeman were horsedealers, and that his son appears to have married a traveller?particularly as william george spain was a bit of a rogue who stood trial at the old bailey for organising the theft of horses,he was discharged but his two accomplices each got 6 years penal servitude.id be grateful for any opinions on this, and if anyone thinks im wrong if they could put me right, thanks, nel.

jamie, most of what i have is before 1901,the only info i have after 1901 is for the four children of albert grey/elizabeth spain that im aware of,they were twins mary winifred and nancy born 02/10/1917 place unknown, both died in canterbury in 1990,which is strange.im going to get these death certs to find out more.nancy is buried in her fathers grave in whitstable, kent.i dont yet know where mary is.the other two are william albert born 23/09/1919 swansea, died 1998 canterbury, buried with father, and elizabeth born 1820 swansea, not sure where she died or where she is.i dont yet have any siblings for for albert edward, his parents were william henry born 1869 street, somerset and winifred williams born swansea.william henrys sibs were ernest born 1864 pilton, somerset, albert b1870 walton, somerset, annie born 1875 swansea, alfred archibald born 1877 swansea(married margaret gallivan j/a/s 1896 swansea, the daughter of patrick gallivan and catherine whellan from cork),ethel born 1882 swansea (married cornelius crowley ,swansea, son of john and mary from ireland).other connected names are McCarthy and welsh.do any of these names ring a bell in your family?does your family have a tradition of horse dealing?also, have you managed to get back before 1900 with any of yours?im going to be doing more digging on these so ill keep you posted, regards, nel.
