He was John Emmett - not Smith

He could have been born as the result of a female Illingworth/male Emmett marriage or a female Smith/male Emmett marriage

Have you searched freebmd for any such marriages?

i would try finding john emmet in the census first then his birth then try and trace him from that.
if you could post some details of where john smith was in 1891 and grace in 1901 it might help to look up

if i have this right so far i have a link to john emmett. i cant prove any of this as fact but bear with me
in 1851 william illingworth is lodging with mercy hudson and her daughter rhoda ann.
i think mercy dies and william is married to mary hudson possibly her sister in 1857. there is a marriage in 1861 and on the same page is rhoda ann hudson and john emmott
i cant find them on any census though.
in 1882 there is a marriage of john emmett and martha ellen coulson. as far as i can see their first daughter is called rhoda. i think this john emmett could be the son of john emmott and rhoda hudson
tenuos i know but it does work
