Hi
This question stems from a post which I put up a while ago looking for a War Memorial. I got great results - link when I find it!. Mark's posts on here this week also set me thinking, but I thought I'd start a new one rather than hijack onme of his.

Modified:
Sorry, this was the original link for the full story! Also a brilliant photo from Ken!

This was the memorial which I had an old photograph of, on wjich my Grandmother's cousin William Diggle appeared. It turned out to be Collyhurst, and I received some lovely photo's of it fully restored today.
I'd hoped to find more information on his military career. I've pretty well covered the family side. I haven't found a surviving service record, or any information elsewhere.
Mark's posts set me thinking though. I'm puzzled now. I know military buffs will think this is obvious, but how many Royal Engineers Regiments were there? I was surprised to see Signals etc. I thught he was just inb the Royal Engineers, Number 81328.
How many different types of Royal Engineers were there in Lancashire, and am I likely to find any more information in Lancashire, as I've failed elsewhere?
Any ideas gratefully received!
(I do know he's buried at Chipilly Cemetery. (CWGCD).
Thank you again for those who spent all the time on the original quest! I hope it's still looking as good having been damaged once!
Best wishes
Emms

Wow, Thank you one and all!
There is evidently more to this than meets the eye, and it looks fascinating!
I shall peruse all of that and try and take it in! I've had a look on the website about the formation of the units and it explains quite a bit and gives me more to think about!
Thank you again!
Best wishes Emmd

one of their most dangerous jobs, was to go in after the infantry, and "turn"the captured trenches around. the fronts of trenches are made bullet proof,by inserting timber baulks, bricks or iron plate in between the sandbags, but the reverse of the trench isnt bullet proof when a trench is captured, they have to make the reverse, bullet proof, because its now the front of the trench, and they have to repair much of the trench, because our artillery has pounded it,all this is done under shell and machine gun fire if my memory serves me correct, the RE have won the most VCs.

HI This is great!
Thank you very much Mack! I'd often wondered how they managed to build the trenches I'd seen pictures of in a battlefield situation, but it osunds like just what you said, under fire, in great danger.
I must try for the books you've listed and sometime this weekend, read again everything you've written!
Best wishes
