Struggling to find my gt gt grandfather.
« on: Thursday 25 June 09 23:32 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help? I'm struglling to find my gt gt grandfather?

George Edwards b. 1837 Rochdale, Lancs

He is listed as living with his mother and siblings in 1841 on School Lane, Castleton, Rochdale

Class: HO107; Piece 550; Folio: 28; Page: 11

He married Sarah Ann Sharples on 20 August 1867.

I have last found him in the 1871 census, with his wife and family.

Class: RG10; Piece: 4118; Folio: 62; Page: 29

The problem is, that I cannot find his birth on the IGI or Free BMD?? Can anyone find him?

Hi,

Registration didn't start until the September quarter of 1837 so if he was born earlier, he wouldn't show up on the BMD's.

Yes, but I can't find any record of it on the IGI either?

Hi,

I have family from Rochdale and as far as I know the only records on IGI are much earlier than the one you are looking for.

I thought maybe online parish clerk might have them but they only go to 1828.  However they do keep adding stuff so keep an eye on:

Agree with Genie as he was already 4 in the 1841 census, so he was probably born prior to registration.

Do you have his marriage certificate and if so was it at the Register Office or a nonconformist Church?  If a church it may point to what religion he was.  Grasping at straws here, but they often married people of the same faith.  It may help us locate a baptism as it doesn`t look like he was baptised at St. Chads.

Thanks Mo and Christine.
Haven't sent for his wed cert yet, but will also keep my eye on the parish records.
Many Thanks

St Chads, Rochdale is very well covered on the BVRI discs including the time frame we are talking about (1835 to 1841) and I have checked them.  He isn`t listed!  Which leads me to believe it could have been a Methodist, Catholic etc etc baptism.  Bear in mind that  he wasn`t necessarily baptised where he was born  Roll Eyes  Sometimes they took them to where the parents were living or even granny.  You could baptise a child anywhere you wanted.

That's a good reminder for me, Mo.  I have BVRI but the more info that comes online the less I think to look at it.  Undecided

I'll remember next time, I hope.

I've just had a quick look through bmd registers - the non-parochial site.

http://www.bmdregisters.co.uk/

No George Edwards which fits the bill but a few in Lancashire - all with a reference which contains predominantly Presbyterian/Wesleyan records.

The family came from Castleton, if that helps?

My g. grandfather was born in Castleton, too, but fortunately after civil registration so I never had the need to search for his baptism.

This link takes you to part of the genuki site which lists all the churches (all denominations) in the Castleton area.  I've looked at a few and many are too modern to be of use but you may find one or two possibles and a link to where their records are kept, if they've survived.
