Gavin/Roach Sedgefield
« on: Thursday 25 June 09 23:19 UTC (UK) »

Hi All,

Could anyone help with finding the parents of James Gavin and Eleanor Roach who lived in Sedgefield and married in 1931?

Thank you,

Curttom.

Hi

You would need to buy credits and check the 1911 census for them

There is a birth for an Eleanor Roach in the March qtr 1902 in Sedgefield

Nothing in Sedgefield for James Gavin but there is a 1905 birth in Lanchester and another 1905 in Durham for James Michael Gavin

You really need their marriage cert to find how old James was and his fathers name

Looking at the free 1911 index you will find her as Nellie Roach aged 10 living in Sedgefield

Thanks Carole, do you think that Nellie is Eleanor then?

Not baptised in Parish church of Sedgefield around 1903, had to go to library so had a look.

Nellie was a popular corruption of the christian name Eleanor

You could wait until you have a copy of their marriage cert as it will give Eleanor's fathers name so you can then check it with the 1911 details

Thanks for that J R, very good of you, I have found out that both sets of parents  were from Southern Ireland so it gets harder.

Thanks Carole too. I will have to send for certs as I am getting nowhere.

Just to add, they both died young, possibly 40's but I can't find records of their deaths either!

Hi

Have you only looked at the partially transcribed index on freebmd?  Transcriptions after 1935 are very thin on the ground -see http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/progressD.shtml#1930

You will need to search the full GRO index  which is available at your nearest main library if you live in the UK.  It can also be searched online if you have an Ancestry subscription or at www.findmypast.com which is a paysite

It is very time consuming as you would need to download the image for each quarter of each year searched (4 per year) so you really need to try and narrow down the search

I have found out a bit more info, Eleanor had  sisters Cecilia Nora and Susan. They lived in West Cornforth and Coxhoe in the early 1900's. James had a sister Margaret. Both sets of parents were of Irish descent. James and Eleanor married 1931 and had their only child, James Anthony in 1932.

I am going to visit the library to see if I can find them. But I live 200 miles away from Durham, so just hoping that my local library will help.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Hi

All main libraries carry the same GRO index so it won't matter which one you are using - the entries will be the same

Ok that's great thanks Carole.

I have looked on the 1911 census and the Nellie you found is definately the one, so thanks for that.  James Gavin is a bit more obscure but I think I may have the right family living in Coxhoe.
