Unregistered Births - Completed thanks
« on: Friday 26 June 09 00:56 UTC (UK) »

I have come across several births recorded 1854 - 1860 as baptism in records of the C of E church (All Saints) Howick but not appearing in Birth microfiche or on NZBMD online .  Father was a Fencible, (arrived in NZ 1852)  and several of the children have subsequent Marriage and Death entries - just no Birth Huh

NZBMD site mentions in their Timeline "1848 - Birth and Death Registrations Introduced (Colonial Office)." but does not say if it was compulsory at that time Huh

Can anyone comment or advise on this?
Thanks

Hi John

Registration of Births became "compulsory" in 1856.

But thinking back to those times, you need to consider just how many of the population, might have known about this "requirement" - and how "strictly" it might have been "enforced" ??   Smiley

yes, I wonder how it was enforced as my grandfather was born in 1921 and not registered until 1950!!!, even though his mother had a child regd in 1918 and baptised, i think things were quite lax back then, good luck in your search.

I think it also depended how close they were to the nearest registerstration office and if not close the birth went unregistered.
I have one in 1872 that was not registered.

Thanks Lu, pixie6 and newbe.
That helps to clear up the mystery.
