Help wanted - Christchurch Hospital
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 16:37 UTC (UK) »

Hi all

I wonder if someone could help me please?

I'm looking for my gread aunt who left England in 1927 to work, we believe, in Christchurch Hospital.  She visited family back in England in 1953 and she is listed on the 'Wellington Star' passenger list as 'Assistant Matron' now family lore states that she later became Head Matron but after the late 50's early 60's it seems we lost track of her, her details are as follows

Edith May Harris born 1899 Shropshire (known as May) I am led to believe she never married, she certainly wasn't married before 1953, death unknown.

Could somebody point me in the right direction?  I would like to know her work history, if she did later get married and when she died.

Any help would be appreciated

Sharmar

Hi Sharmar

It appears that your Edith May HARRIS died in 1991 - the NZ online death index shows this entry and gives a date of birth for her, as 29 December 1898.

Also I note that Archives New Zealand (Christchurch office) hold at probate record for "Edith May HARRIS - Christchurch - 1991".

Sorry, can't help with any details of her employment history
but I'd be happy to check to see if there is an obituary for (Edith) May and also source her funeral notice for you.

Johnbarr

Thanks for the link.

Lu

Could you please possible find me a death notice or let me know where I could obtain a copy of the probate?

Newbe

Could you have a look please? then I can decide if I should try and get a copy (does it mention a brother called Sydney or a sister called Nancy).

Thank you all for your help, I will of course return the favour if you have Shropshire, England connections.

Hi Sharmar

Finally, have found the funeral notice ( it wasn't published until some six days after her death).

I'll send to you, via PM.

Unfortunately, was unable to locate an obituary.
[In the old days of course, these usually appeared in papers 1 or 2 days after a person had died.    Modern-day newspapers though, have a tendency to only publish selected obits for very prominent people ... and often these don't show up till many weeks later.]

Perhaps you could try contacting Christchurch Hospital to see if they have any (employment) information ?
