Northumberland **COMPLETED**
« on: Friday 26 June 09 01:09 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know where Holy Miers/Myers is or was?  It's probably in the Hexham area.  My great-great grandmother is shown in the 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901 census as being born there.  Her married name was Jane Greenwell, maiden name as yet unknown. Thanks in anticipation

The only Jane Kirkton that I can find on the 1841 in the area is in Wylam:

HO107/841 Bk 19 Folio 9 Page 11

Kirton
John, 45, coal miner
Sarah, 45
Joseph, 25
Ann, 15
Robert, 15
Thomas, 12
Jane, 10
Elizabeth, 8
Isabella, 4
Hannah, 1
John, 20

All b. Northumberland

I'm wondering about the Holy Mi/yers - I can't find it on any maps so far. There are a few places starting with Holly in the area - could it have been miswritten  Undecided

I've ben trying to make out what it says on the 1861 census*
Not even the excellent transcribers at Durham Records Online could make anything of it.

Given what we know from the other censuses, it could be Myres  Huh There certainly seems to be a 'y' in the middle of the word.

No, I've not heard of it.

I can't see anything resembling it on the Genuki lists http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/Gazetteer/
and http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/FullIndex.html

Come on Michael, we need you (perhaps he's at the pub).

If he is, it's within yelling distance of me  Grin Grin Grin

I spent a while on the old-maps site looking around both Wylam/Ovingham and Hexham but haven't come up with anything yet.

I did find a Holly Moor (I think) colliery but that might have been later on and it was in Durham.

If her father was a coal miner, it's possible  Undecided
