The various census return images (on ancestry) all give place of birth as Northumberland but then

Holy Miers   1871
Hexham      1881
Holy Myers   1891
Holy Myers   1901

I put 2 & 2 together - did I get 5?

A couple of you have used Folio references.  Can I use these to search on ancestry and if so how?

Thanks again

There is a place in Hexham known as Holy Island - that's about the best I can offer at the moment - the brain is giving out. I'll look again tomorrow, unless, in the meantime, Michael has come back from the pub and sorted it all for us  Grin

If you enter the piece, folio and page number at the bottom of the search box, it will come up with the correct page for you. The RG ref is already there   Smiley

If and only if this is the Jane, there is a Jane Kirton on family search born 1832 to John and Sarah yet I can see no ther siblings, Jane was christened at St Andrews Brunswick Pl Formerly Orphan Hse-Wesl Mnew, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. Does that mean anything to you at all?

Hi evie

Good find  Smiley

Brunswick Place is near Monument/Eldon Square in central Newcastle. It's a long way from Hexham but it's possible I suppose. Maybe they fell on hard times in the 1830s  Cry  and the first place she remembers is this Myres place  Undecided

PS - I looked at her sister yesterday and she was down as born Wall, so Hexham would be the right area

On the 1891 RG12/4103 F 138 P 33 and the 1901 RG13/4682 F 49 P 26  it is very clearly Holy Myers.

Still can't find it though.

Michael wishes he had gone to the pub, instead of covering my floor in old maps ( and new ones) and head-bangers, getting nowhere for past few hours....and nothing to offer.

I think Jane was born between Thomas (c1829) and Elizabeth ( c1833),, but their birthplaces are just as tough !

I've ben trying to make out what it says on the 1861 census*
Not even the excellent transcribers at Durham Records Online could make anything of it.
*RG 9/ 3710/ Folio 75/ Page 22

Jennifer

Hi

The transcribers weren't quite so excellent that day.
Greenwich instead of Greenwell
Twaddle (!) instead of Swaddle
Thibblesworth instead of Kibblesworth
and where is Belerulla (John's birthplace). In 1871 it is shown as Durham, Durham

I'm beginning to wish I'd gone to the pub and I don't even drink!  Yet...

I can see you all like a challenge

Oops - might have been a bit hasty.  It could be Twaddle, comparing the T at the beginning of Thomas on the same page.  I stand by the rest tho' - until proved wrong!

I've been up since 5. 30 am this morning and I feel I'd quite like a drink too  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Not sure that I can find any of them in 1851. There's a family in Newfield,  Durham with similar names but ages are all out except for Hannah. Places of birth look like West Yekim, Hexham.

The John Kirton, aged 20 on the 1841, looks as if he might have stayed in the area  and is down as b. Ovin(g)ton.

Eyes have given up  Cry
