I think John's birthplace might perhaps be Bedlington.
For Sarah, Joseph and Thomas - does it say Westlaw?

Morning Jennifer  Smiley

The 1851 entry looks like W<something>law but couldn't find anything on the maps. As Joseph was Wall and Thomas was Kirk Haugh in the following census, it must be up there somewhere  Undecided

Holy Myres will probably be in the same broad area, I would think.

Not sure how Gosforth got in!

added - looks like Wedlaw or Widlaw

Kirkhaugh is in the South Tyne valley just NW of Alston. Maybe we've been concentrating around Hexham/Tyne Valley too much.

PS - How about Whitley Chapel, south of Hexham, for Sarah's birth place  Smiley

PPS - OK - nothing for it but to do some fieldwork - I'm off to Hexham. All this peering at maps has made be yen for the wide open spaces around there  Grin

Google Holymire Bastle, Kirkhaugh. Its a medieval building, still standing in Kirkhaugh, now used as a barn.

Click on 'location of this site on a map'.
It's right by a spot called Whitley - mother's birthplace?

Fantastic (why didn't you tell us this earlier  Grin )

Get your head out of those maps now Michael  Grin

It is on the 1871 census as 'Holly Myers'.

I don't see it on the 1841 or 1861.

There is a foto of the Bastle ( now a barn) on Keys to the Past site

Full map ref is NY69584851 ( sometimes abbreviated to NY 6948)

The bastle lay in between Whitley and Whitlow.

MD ( now a couple of cans before Northumberland Plate- hope next quest is harder ! )
