Look up Wellington Archives -NZ Railways
« on: Friday 26 June 09 03:34 UTC (UK) »

Hi team,

Having noted the responses to the earlier item regarding NZ Railways staff, I wonder if some kind soul, when next visiting Archives NZ,  could look up to find details of my grandfather Emil Percy Anderson (sometimes known as Percy Emil).

He was employed as a raileway porter at the time of his marriage in Petone on 24 June 1912 and was in 1914 made Postmaster at the Whenuakura Railway Station (somewhere near Wanganui) as that is where my mother was born. It is my understanding that Postmasters jobs (at railway stations) were undertaken by Railways staff although officially appointed by NZ Post.

Any details would nbe very much appreciated

Hi Don

I would love to get there again and peruse some of those NZ Railways records further but in reality it may be quite a long wait... sorry. A great photographic record in all those drawers to look at as well.

Volumes of NZ Post and Telegraph staff are also there so hopefully he'd be in either/or.

Do I recall that you made a journey to Wellington to have the frustration of being outside of Archives opening hours  Undecided ... We only had just over an hour before closing and some of that was taken up registering so felt lucky to get a few items I went for.

Your request will possibly be answered by a local, if not I'll keep it in mind for 'some way off'

Many thanks for that offer - it will be some time before we get down from Hamilton - but it was good to learn that these records are available.

Cheers on this chilly day

Hi Don

Many rural Railway Stations were also Post Offices. The person in charge, be he a fully fledged Station Master or a Porter, was also the Post master by virtue of him holding that position.  The Post Office got no say in the matter. Interestingly in Arthurs Pass the Station Master was the electrical supply authority and sent out the power bills, in other places they represented the local council and collected rates and registered dogs. In those days they were jacks of all trades, not a Jill to be seen.

Hi Alan, many thanks for that.

I did note from an entry in Papers Past that his appointment as Postmaster was gazetted so must have had some official Post and Telgraph Department approval.

That was sometime in 1914

Regards

No promises because I'm totally new to searching at Archives, but I'll be visiting the Wellington centre on Wednesday morning.  I've printed out this thread to see if it's something I can easily find.

I'm assuming the staff are always as helpful as they were to this pair of novices Min, so best of luck with your visit. Our lookups we ordered came out fairly quickly and there was plenty to keep us occupied while we waited. We were all watching the clock end of day of course, hopefully we can plan it better next time.
