Any VICARY Hunters
« on: Monday 10 August 09 23:04 UTC (UK) »

Newbie searcher requires help please.

I have my great grandfather on the 1891 census in Plymouth age 67 born abt 1824 in Appledore, North Devon married to Mary Ann Parnell (or Parnall) age 47 born about 1844 in Rattery (small village between South Brent and Totnes, together with my grandfather William Henry aged 11 born 7th January 1880.

I can find no trace of William Snr in any census or BMD before 1891.Any help or hints would be appreciated.

Also looking for Claude Vicary (Born 1917) moved to Somerset had 5 or 6 sons.

Many thanks

However, the 1881 census shows the family living in Plymouth St Andrew, (11 Higher Lane).
William VICKARY 50 b. PLymouth
Elizabeth VICKARY 37 b. Rattery
John VICARY 7 b. Plymouth
William VICKARY 1 b. Plymouth

Hi Tamarboy Smiley
Welcome to Rootschat
Boy is this confusing Roll Eyes

1891 has William born 1880 as age 41. Census image is clearly 11.
As Mary Ann is so much younger than William snr this is probably a second marriage.

So it appears, Elizabeth is the Mother of John Vickary c 1873 and your William c 1880 as per 1881 Census DOB7 posted. Although William snr is a baker and in 1891 a masons labourer Huh
I will have another look at this later tonight.

There is this marriage 1883;

William VICKERY
Mary Ann ARNALL
March 1883
Barnstaple 5b 745

And a death;
Elizabeth VICKERY
June 1882
Taunton 5c 254
Age 36 ( born abt 1846)

Do you have the Marriage Cert of William jnr to confirm his parents names. Could you post details please.

Thanks for the quick replies.....

I have William Henry's birth certificate, shows father as William & Mother as Mary Parnall.  7th January 1880.  Surname is definately VICARY.

The FreeGen 1891 census info shows them living at 6/7 St Andrews Street
William Vicary age 67
Mary Ann age 47
William Henry age 11.   This date correct as I have seen his grave stone.
On a BMD search I have found Mary Ann Parnell born in Rattery 1844.

If there was an elder son he has not been mentioned.  Unfortunately all parents & grandparents have long since passed.

Frederick W J Vicary, born December 1912 (my father) & Claude A H Vicary (his brother).  Father William Henry Vicary, Mother Alice Louisa Smith.  The Ada K L is Ada Katherine Louisa thier sister.

Thanks for your help / confirmation though the use of the "K" in all registers is confusing.

Yes, regos an be very incorrect in the transcription Roll Eyes

Thank you for posting the info re his birth cert.
What is his Fathers occupation?

The 1891 on Ancestry has William jnr incorrectly transcribed as age 41. As I said the image is actually 11. It is the same address you quoted.

I think you will find William and Marys marriage reg is the one I posted, incorrectly transcribed, as there is NO other marriage 1847+ for a Mary/Mary Ann/Anne Parnell on Freebmd with a Vickary/Vickery on the same page.

Cheers,

Trish,

thankyou for the Mary Ann confirmation, from that it would look as though she was "born the wrong side of the blanket" as we say.

I've just started to look at my mothers' side and that appears to be just as difficult once you get past 1891.

Hi Marty,

It is hard to say at this stage if she was illegitimate. 1841 census has another daughter Elizabeth, slightly older. Due to the ages of the Parnalls they could have lots of children who had left home by 1841.

Her birth cert would be the way to confirm;

Mary Ann PARNELL
December 1844
Totnes 9 477
