James Rumbol b. abt 1811, Lambeth
« on: Friday 26 June 09 09:28 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I am searching for James Rumbol born abt 1811 in Lambeth.

He married Sarah Dent in Lambeth 1833.

In 1851 and 1861 census he is living in St Southwark, Surrey. He is working as a carpenter.

I can't find any record of birth on IGI or on ancestry.com.

I have been in contact with some people who have also been searching for a birth record for James - even going on several trips to London Metropolitan Archives but they have found nothing.

Does anyone have any suggestions about where I should search next?

The usual thoughts:

1. The IGI is not complete. I am not sure of the coverage for Lambeth; you'd have to check which churches were there and which not, and then look for baptisms etc. in the churches not covered via the IGI.
2. Do you have a copy of the original marriage record? This may list witnesses that could be family members.
3. Which church were the marriage and the baptisms of his children held at? Are there any other Rumbols who might be from related family groups in the same areas? Or living close to each other in the census?
4. Were his children baptised and married in CoE churches?
5. Did any of his children have unusual names, middle names, etc, that could be hints to other family members?

Hi jorose,

I know the baptism for his oldest son (my g,g,g grandfather) William James Rumbol was 17 August 1835 at St John the Evangalist, Lambeth, Surrey.

I'm going to try to order the record into my local LDS family history centre so perhaps that will give more details.

Thanks,

Rebecca

Hi Rebecca

This is just a long shot but the following christening are shown on the IGI, all at Saint Mary's Church, Lambeth. Father William RUMBOL Mother Ann. Looking at the names of James and Sarah's children on 1841 Census with the eldest being William and next Joseph, families followed names through generations so they could be James's siblings but only could?

William Alsopp RUMBOL Christening: 04 SEP 1803
Ann RUMBOLD Christening: 16 AUG 1807
Joseph RUMBOL Christening: 07 JUL 1813

Best of luck
Robert

Hi Robert,

Thanks Smiley

It does seem likely that they were siblings. From going through alot of the census' etc it seems like there weren't that many with the last name Rumbol - spelt in the same way. There's Rumbold's, Rambal's, Rumball's and so on. So there are lots of different variations. So - it's quite likely that they were related in some way - even if cousins.

I know that all on all the official documents (birth & marriage certs and the marriage record for James) the family spells their name Rumbal. So I almost wonder if James' birth record is under a different variation of the spelling.

Thanks again,

Rebecca Smiley
