James SERJEANT - disappeared/died/Emigrated?
« on: Friday 26 June 09 11:54 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I thought I had got somewhere in tracing the death of my gg-grandfather James Serjeant, but the death certificate came today and unfortunately it isn't him.

James Serjeant (Serjeant is spelt various other ways eg Sergeant), was born on the 5th November 1846 in Ipswich, Suffolk.  He married Maria Palmer in 1869 and they lived in Ipswich.  Unfortunately it seems the marriage broke up and they went their separate ways.  Maria moved with the children to Yorkshire and James went to live with his sister Harriett Chaplin and her husband William Chaplin, in the 1881 census they are living at St Clement, Ipswich.  In 1901 James is a visitor (but I think he was still living with his sister Harriett) in West Ham, Essex.

I have found Harriett and her family in the 1911 census still living in West Ham, but no James Serjeant is living with them.

I found a death for a James Sargeant (January 1919 West Ham) and this is the one that I thought was James as they shared the same date of birth, but it's not him.

I cannot find anything for James after 1901 in West Ham.  Maybe James moved back to Suffolk after 1901, maybe he moved elsewhere in the country or maybe he even died, I just don't know and cannot find anything at all to help me.

If anyone can help or guide me in the right direction to try to find him, this would be much appreciated and it would mean so much to me to actually find trace of him.

Thank you

Hi,

I know what you mean about the Serjeants with regard to the spelling of the surname.  My ancestors also came from Suffolk, though mainly from Hundon in Suffolk.  I don't have a James in my tree, though I came across a couple of James' whilst searching.  I have some records and will look and see if I can help.

Hi Ann,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes the Serjeant name has and is being quite an annoying one to trace.  It seems it was spelt so many different ways.  I know my grandfather changed it from Serjeant to Sergeant and luckily it has stayed as that ever since.

Can't seem to find anything for James, not even a death, so I've no idea what happened to him.  Thanks for taking the time to look.

Someone has mentioned to me that if there is no record of the person you are searching or even no record of a death, then maybe that person may have emigrated.

I don't know where I can find the emigration records to check for a James Serjeant, but if he did then this would be sometime after 1901. He would be in his mid to late 50's.

Would this be possible?

Hi Ann,

Thank you for taking the time to look for me.

I know that in 1901 James is a visitor at his sister's house in West Ham, Essex and he is recorded as being single.  So maybe he re-married sometime?  I suppose if I could find a marriage for James and Elizabeth and even better an age this would help so much, and just maybe this is the James I am looking for.

Does it say a date when these passengers left England?

Thanks once again.   Smiley

Hi,

I did look on ancestry for a divorce record, but couldn't find anything.  What was his sisters married name?

Sorry,  I forgot to add that the ship sailed on 29th June 1929.  A bit old to emigrate and there was the great recession in the states then.

I wonder if there was any connection between Winifred Sergeant??  Even in my branch of Sargeants we brothers and sisters with the surname spelt differently.

If you find any more clues let me know, in the mean time I will keep looking for you.

Hi Ann,

His sister was Harriett Chaplin and her husband was William Chaplin who lived in West Ham.  In the 1881 census he was lodging with them in Ipswich, but I cannot find a census for James in 1891 which I found abit puzzling.  Then in 1901 he is a visitor at his sister's home in West Ham.

I haven't come across any Winifred, but I don't suppose we can rule her out just yet.

I'm wondering now whether the 1891 census might hold a clue, if only I can find it.

Thanks for all your help.
