Birth in Union workhouse.
« on: Friday 26 June 09 13:10 UTC (UK) »

Wondering if its usual that babies born in the workhouse are illegitimate.I have a relative and her birth certificate has her born in Abergavenny workhouse in 1899.The birth certificate states the father's name, the mother's husband, but the name is then crossed out and initialled by the registrar. So I'm not sure whether he is the father or not.Any ideas anyone. Hope to hear from someone who has had a similar problem. Thanks Euansma.

Welcome to rootschat euansma.  Cheesy

This doesn't really answer your question, but it interesting nevertheless:

You say the couple were married - did they marry before the birth of the child?

Both illegitimate and legitimate children were born in the workhouses. Just because someone was born in the workhouse doesn't mean they were illegitimate and of course illegitimate children were born outside the workhouse.

If you have a birth certificate where the registrar has scored out some of the information it may be worth writing to the local registrar office for the certificate (not the General GRO office) to ask them if they have more information. This is because the registrars had to keep a list of all the amendments they made and why - the amendmnet on your certificate should have a number.

Have you looked up the marriages on FreeBMD - were the mother and named father married?

Hi everyone, thanks for your interest.Yes its a bit of a puzzle.I have the family in the 1891 Wales census living in Blaenavon Monmouthshire. They were married and had 2 children. Then they all disappear in 1901 census.Mary Ann Hill finally appears again in 1911 Wales census with her daughter Gladys and living with a family also called Hill where the father is a widow and she is housekeeper. To make things more complicated on both of the marriage certificates for Gladys Hill she says her father's name is Charles Hill.So I don't know, I think the advice to find out what the reasons  are behind the crossing out of father's name is a good idea didn't know you could do that.So thats next on my list. Thanks a lot to all will let you know if I find out anything else. Euansma
