My 2xGreat Grandfather was Edward Wilkinson born c1821. He was the son of Chistinia (nee Ridding/Redding) and Edmund Wilkinson. In 1851 and 1861 census it says he was born in Whittington, Lancashire and in 1871 he says born in Whittington, Westmorland and in 1881 census he was born in Kirkby Lonsdale (where Christinia was born!). I believe that Whittington is on the border of Lancs and Westmorland. Does anyone know which county it was in then (1821)?

Hi,
It was in Lancashire in 1821 and as you say right on the boundary. See: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Whittington/

Hello,
Thank you for your reply mosiefish. I have been looking for more info on Edward's parents. Edmond was born in Lancashire in about 1785. He was a stone mason. Christinia Ridding/Redding was born in about 1789, in Kirkby Lonsdale and I believe I have found them on the 1841 census in Ford Lane, Eccles, together with Edward aged 20. I have not been able to find their deaths or any sign of them on later censuses. Can anyone help me with this?

This death would match where the couple were living in 1841:
Deaths Sep 1852 WILKINSON Christiana Salford 8d 3
The 1851 census for Manchester and Salford was badly water-damaged, and although some of the information has been recovered, there are still big gaps: http://www.1851-unfilmed.org.uk/
(There is also a possible death for Edmund in Manchester in 1949 1849 - edit!)

Hi,
I know you already know of Isabella but just in case your haven't got her baptism:-
Baptism: 23 Oct 1825 St Chad, Rochdale, Lancashire, England Isabella Wilkinson - Daughter of Edward Wilkinson & Christiana Abode: School Lane Occupation: Mason Baptised by: Jas. Aspinale Curate Register: Baptisms 1822 - 1825, Page 508, Entry 4118 Source: LDS Film 1342496
I was hoping to find Edward and Christiana's marriage but no luck yet.

Hello Luzzu,
Thank you , Thank you again. I did not have the baptism details or the marriage place. I know a bit about Christiana's parents, but I do not know who Edmund's parents were, so if you can weave your magic over their details I would be very grateful!
Thank you again for all your help.

You are welcome.
Running out of ideas at the moment .
There are a few Edward Wilkinson baptisms on www.familysearch.org in the late 1700's for but none that I could definitely say were yours.
On www.lan-opc.org.uk there is a gap between 1749 and 1813 on the baptism records for St Michael the Archangel. My feeling is that if he was born in Whittington he would have been baptised at this Church. Not sure why there is a gap - either the records didn't survive or they are still to be transcribed.
Does the family have any links with Downham (near Blackburn and Clitheroe)? There are loads of Wilkinsons on www.lan-opc.org.uk
It might be a good idea to try and find out who Isabella and Betsey married. Also it is possible Betsey died in infancy as you said you hadn't come across her before. Also 3 children doesn't seem many for the time - I think there must be more to find.
Best of luck with your searching and if you find any clues post them on here, you will get loads of help. In the meantime, I will keep a look out.

Hello Luzzu,
Isabella married William Brown and died in 1899 in Tottenham. I will see if I can find any sign of Betsy.
Thank you again for all your time.

Hello Manchester Rambler,
Thank you so much. I sent for Christiana Wilkinson's death certificate and it is the right one!!!!! It states that she is a widow so now I will search for Edmund's death between 1841 and 1851. The Informant was Dorothy Wilkinson who is someone who I have not come across before. She lived in Sovereign Street, Pendleton, but I think that is in the area that was damaged in the 1851 census returns (as was Ford Lane ,where Christiana lived!!!)
Thank you again for your help. I have been searching for this info for ages without success and you and rootschat solved it in days.
