Is this a lost cause? - Completed with thanks
« on: Friday 26 June 09 14:11 UTC (UK) »

My dear, dear son Roll Eyes has just arrived back from a biology field study and while he was there he dropped his mobile phone into a shallow puddle of sea water whilst taking photographs.  It has stopped working. Is there anything he can try to revive it please?

Evie

Take it apart as much as possible... battery out, sim card out, etc.; wash all the bits in several rinses of clean fresh water ... leave somewhere warm to dry it a.s.a.p. (airing cupboard ?)   You need to get the sticky salty water out ...

When absolutely dry ... put together again, cross fingers and see if it works ...

I know of a couple of mobiles that have fallen in toilets, one of them mine. Huh
In spite of effects to dry them, we found they needed replacing down the track as we couldn't get all the moisture out.

Good luck with his

Using a hair dryer might help ?  But not on very hot !

But I think the essential is to get rid of the salt and sea water ...

Thanks Gadget and bikermickau for your replies. At the moment the phone is drying out after being rinsed in the airing cupboard.

The rice is a good idea for drying.

I wondered why he didn't reply to my text Roll Eyes I thought that's lads for you Cheesy

Just seen your reply Lydart, yes we'll try that shortly after dinner

My son got caught in a rain storm, camera phone soaked. Took it apart, let it dry and it's still working 9 months later. I know your case is different with salt water, but still well worth a try.

Just an update.

The phone is working fine now. The screen is slightly patchy in places but only faintly so he is very happy and has asked me to pass on his thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

Thanks from me too Smiley

Pleased to hear it Evie, Suggest that the final moisture MIGHT be removed if you keep the phone in a sealed container with some of those dessicant packs, as provided with some laptops etc. when not in use, just might finish the job, and would certainly do no harm.
