James Emmanuel Meadows was my great grandfather, and my grandmother was the 2nd child of his first marriage to Jessie Hutchinson who died in 1912. He remarried in 1918 and had six more children. He died in Salop Mental Hospital in 1933. I have managed to trace a lot of the family history - two of his daughters went to Canada, my grandmother went into the army then was in service in London then in Bucks were she married. I would dearly love to fill in the blanks. i believe his family from his second wife are still in the Shropshire area around Broseley and Telford.

Was the second marriage the one to Kate E. Oakley? I think she may have been a widow - Kate Edith Morgan m. Albert Oakley, 1906, Madeley district.
I cannot find any children to her and Albert (don't seem to be any on the 1911 census or post-1911 on freebmd). Six children listed on freebmd to her and James (youngest being twins in 1925).
Do you need the earlier censuses/things about him with his family?

Yes. Thats his second wife. Her husband died in 1914. I have all the information about his first family ( my grandmother and her siblings ) I would really like to trace any living relatives. What happened to them all has been a mystery for so long as my grandmother wouldn't talk about any of it. Thanks so much for your reply.

Hello. Thank you so much for your reply. I was only sorting out papers yesterday and looking at photo of James and his son James Jnr -( James Snr in Army uniform,) and photo of his first wife Jessie and their six surviving children, including my grandmother, Florence. Photo taken in 1910, just before James Snr went off to visit his father in Canada, I presume to get a job out there as the ships manifest says he is travelling to his father in Moosejaw, and that he is to work in a flour mill. Obviously that didn't work out and he came back to Liverpool sometime in 1911. I have loads of information on the Meadows family including family tree. They originated in Northamptonshire, then went to London where they were successful bricklayers, then wholesale emmigration to Canada in the 1900's. All except James who was not involved in the bricklaying business. No idea how he and Jessie came to be in Liverpool 1910 - 1915. James was still in Liverpool then. I have record of him trying to enlist in the army in 1915, but he was rejected because of ill health. My gran never talked about her early life and how or why the family came to be split up after her mother's death in 1912. I think it was all too painful for her. She walked away from it all in 1918 and ended up in London, then to Newport pagnell in Bucks in 1925, and i have only recently discovered she was originally one of 7 children. She only ever spoke of the two sisters who went to relatives in Canada, and of a brother who died very young. She never mentioned the three youngest ones, Rosa Ellen, James Jnr and Ada Edith. My name is Debby and email is (*). I would love to hear any information you have. I have managed to put together no end of information and solved quite a few mysteries regarding my grandmother's life. I am more than happy to send you photocopies of all the stuff I have gleaned. Thank you so much for getting in touch. look forward to hearing from you. Best regards, Debby

I am a grandson of James Emmanuel Meadows and Kate Edith Meadows and used to live in Broseley. My mothers name was Beatrice and she had 2 sisters Kate and Sue and 2 brothers Tom and Jim. I would be very interested in any information on James' side of the family because I have not heard of anyone. I believe that we had some relatives in Canada but that is all I know so any further information would be very welcome.

Hello! Thank you so much for getting in touch. I have been researching the Meadows family for a couple of years now, and have an extensive family tree for them all. There are certainly plenty of relatives in Canada! Most of James's family went out there in the early 1900's and they had large families. I can send you all the family tree and history + copies of some photos of James and his first family. I still don't fully understand quite how rootschat works,( despite having used it quite a lot !! ) We can communicate directly but it seems you have to post several comments before this facility works. I would be very interested to hear any stories or memories you have. As you have probably gathered from the postings, my grandmother never spoke about her early days, so finding out about it all has been fascinating. I have copies of birth, death and marriage certificates, and Army records and am very happy to share it all with you. Thank you again for your post, Debby
