Lawrie Family
« on: Friday 26 June 09 18:18 UTC (UK) »

I am compiling a Roll of Honour of Scotland's WW1 Dead. I believe the three sons of William Morton Lawrie and Agnes Alexander Lawrie, of Alexander Street, Coatbridge all died.

I have found William, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and Alexander, Black Watch but, so far, I have been unable to find William's details as to regiment or force served in or date died.

I wondered if anyone could help?

Hi Alistair,

There are 4 Lawries listed on Coatbridge Civic Memorial - maybe the 4th was a relation?

LAWRIE, Alex. W., Lance Corporal, 9th Royal Highlanders (Black Watch)
LAWRIE, John G., Signalman, R.N.V.R.
LAWRIE, Matthew, Private, 10th Gordon Highlanders
LAWRIE, William, Private, 11th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders

Coatbridge Memorial lists all ranks & units - makes life so much easier to identify those listed.

Thanks once again, Anne

There seems to have been quite a clan of Lawries in Coatbridge at that time so Matthew may well have been a relative.

You couldn't really begin to imagine the affect on a fimily of losing three sons/brothers.

Hi Alistair and Anne

Just for your records Alistair, Matthew shows on www.cwgc.org as 'Son of the late James Lawrie, of 7IF, Watson's Land, Whifflet, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire'. Likely entry for the family in 1901 - everyone showing as born in Coatbridge:

James Lawrie 44, Tube Work Foreman
Margaret Lawrie 40
Matthew Lawrie 18, Tube Work Labourer
Peter Lawrie 14
Catherine Lawrie 12
Margaret Lawrie 7
Annie Lawrie 5

Address: 16 F1 East Stewart St, Coatbridge
