Search Fees

Several times now I have sent off for birth  ,marriage or death cerificates and paid the fees but been given a refund of £4 and had to pay £3 search fee because one little detail differs eg Annie instead of Ann, when everything else was exactly the same and yet when I re-apply I have to pay the full fee again.I know they have to be ultra careful and tiny little differences can make a world of difference and no-one would want to follow a false trail because of a minute error but I think when the diference is so small they might be a bit more accommodating. Has anyone else been annoyed by this-I`m sure there must have been .Viktoria.

A much better bet is to order from the local office where the birth or whatever was first registered.   They will nearly always check details free.  Try ringing or emailing them and see what they say first.   You do not need the GRO reference, just an approximate date and place and occasionally that makes marriages more difficult to find as they like to know the church but they are generally very helpful.   Still £7 usually.

Thanks sillgen, I used to do it that way and it was £7 but from Southport it is £8-50. I had a biggish order of 11 and the name variation was so small and on three other birth certs  ordered and searched at  the same time it was Ann--same husband etc  but because on the fourth it was Annie they would not send it. I thought that was a bit mean.I have emailed them to make the point but have only small hopes. Viktoria.

From here in Aus I ordered a Marriage Cert a few months from GRO and received it within 2 weeks.
Then I gets a email saying as they could not find the Birth for the party mentioned I would receive a refund less search fee. (this was based on the marriage information I supplied, one name only and ref no)

They have not aknowledged my emails where I tried to tell them it was a marriage Certificiate I ordered which I have already received.

I did receive the refund. Roll Eyes

You should always enter the name exactly as it is in the GRO indexes(ie on Free BMD) Anything even slightly different and they won't send it.

I once sent for a Percy someone-we knew who he'd married ,gave her name too and they said it wasn't the right couple as he was listed as Percival  Roll Eyes

Andrea, Is it sufficent when ordering from the RO where the event was registered to give the quarter in which it occurred or does one need to be able to say, for example, that the marriage was in June ?

In other words, can one use freebmd to locate the event then quote the quarter along with the names on the persons involved?

I have always just said the event was around the quarter in which I found it on freebmd.  They will know it could be earlier.  The main difficulty with marriages is knowing the church which may mean they have to search a bit more than the GRO do.  Most do it happily though.  If they can't find it they will return the money and all you have lost is a bit of time.   Not something we like to do in this hunt though!

Most RO's will search their registers for marriages when all you have is a qtr?  Let me know what RO's you use.  In my experience (25 years) they will nopt search the registers for marriages because the amount of churches in any district is staggering.  They should let you search their indicies in fact they are required to by law.  One day they will all be digitised which wil make life easier.

As for the GRO less said the better.

Gateshead
Sunderland
Durham
Chester
Manchester
Hexham
Darlington

have all checked marriages given only the quarter.

When I order marriage certs from GRO, I only give the one name I'm sure of, I don't bother with the partner.  I always get the correct cert.  I give the minimum amount of info plus the GRO reference whatever certs I'm ordering.  I learned that if you give too much info and possibly a name that is not as shown on the register they won't send the cert.

My list is much the same as JenB though I would add Middlesbrough/Stockton and Lincoln.   When I first started (well over 25 years ago!) I never used the GRO but always wrote to the local office and I never had a problem.    It is only with the advent of the internet that I have used the GRO.   I am sure these places vary.  You have obviously been unlucky.  Stick to the northern counties!

I do stick to Yorkshire area as a rule and as yet have come across none in my part of Yorkshire.  London area you now have to wait for an age to get historical certs but that seems to be improving now.  I guess its pot luck as to what you get.
