Mary Anne Earl
« on: Tuesday 23 August 05 21:35 UTC (UK) »

Mary Anne Earl was christened 8 October 1820 in St Nicholas, Guildford, Surrey.

I would be very interested to receive any information relating to Mary & her family.  Smiley

Hi

Just doing some housekeeping on the Surrey boards and going through the oldest posts. Now there are further resources available it gives a chance for old posts to be looked at again to see if the information can be found or the chance for posters to say whether this information has been answered and this topic can be completed. If it can be completed please put completed into the title of this topic and it can be moved to Surrey completed (it is never lost off Rootschat) giving more space for other topics to be looked at again by all of us to see if we can help. If you are still looking for the information perhaps you can now add further details to help others search again for you.

Sorry Coonwarra

You didn't respond to my April message so I thought you had found the information. I will put the topic back into the Surrey board.

Thomas Earl 70  Cabinet Maker

Mary Anne's parents were John Earl born c1786 in Surrey and Louisa Manvell or Manwell born quite a bit later c1801 in Surrey, so I don't think the Farnham family can be correct, although I guess they could still be connected in some way.

'My' Earl family is proving very difficult to trace, so any info at all would be useful.

This could be the parents in the 1841 census:

Hooks Row, Woodbridge Rd, (Stoke next to Guildford), Surrey
James Earl, age 15, Surrey, England
John Earl, Lime burner, age 55, Surrey, England
Louisa Earl, age 40, Surrey, England

Possible siblings in the St Nicholas Guildford registers

JOHN EARL
Christening:  30 JUL 1818   Saint Nicholas, Guildford, Surrey
Father:  JOHN EARL
Mother:  LOUISA

SARAH EARLE
Christening:  05 DEC 1824   Saint Nicholas, Guildford, Surrey
Father:  JOHN EARLE
Mother:  LOUISA

and again

SARAH EARL
Birth:  18 SEP 1824
Christening:  14 DEC 1824   New Chapel Independent, Guildford, Surrey
Father:  JOHN EARL
Mother:  LOUISA

Potential burial for Louisa

Burial 1850 Holy Trinity Guildford
Louisa Earl aged 52

There doesn't seem to be a death registration for Louisa on FreeBMD.  You would have to check with Guildford registry office to see if a death registration does exist for her.

Hi Valda

Thank you very much for this.  The info about Sarah is interesting - I wonder what was going on there?

There may have been another sibling named James, who was born around 1821 at Guildford, although I have never managed to find proof that he shared the same parents.

If anyone else has any info on this family I would be pleased to hear from them.

Hi coonwarra

What it seems to mean is that the family became non-conformist around the time of Sarah's birth. Survial rates of non-conformist registers is less good than Anglican although certainly the New Chapel Independent registers survived up to 1837 with no further Earl baptisms in them. However it is difficult to know James' actual age from the 1841 census since on that census it was usual practice for adult ages, those over 15 to be rounded down to the nearest 5. Consequently James aged 15 on that census could be aged between 15-19.

A possible

JAMES EARL
SOPHIA HUTTON WITHALL
Marriage:  29 SEP 1842   Thames Ditton, Surrey

1851 census HO107 1479 folio ?6?
122 Lillingston Street Westminster St John the Evangelist
James Earl 29 Head Married Fireman Guildford Surrey
Sophia H Earl 29 Wife Married Guildford Surrey
John T Earl 8 Son Guildford Surrey
Charles W Earl 6 Son Westminster Middlesex
Rosina Earl 1  Daughter Westminster Middlesex

Giving a birth date of circa 1822 which is possible between the baptisms of Mary Ann and Sarah. James' marriage certificate would give details of his father. Unfortunately I can't see  James Earl on any other censuses to verify his age. Another child Elizabeth Ann was born to the couple in Pimlico in 1854. The 1861 census for the Pimlico area is lost. Sophia is a widower by 1881, born Guildford. Her birthplace is given as Stoke on the 1891 census.

Hi Valda

Thank you very much again for your assistance here.

I have passed this information on to other family members to see what they make of it all.

No doubt more questions will arise as we start to dig deeper!
