john george barnard marriage please
« on: Saturday 01 August 09 07:22 UTC (UK) »

Hi Chris,
I have the following information on the marriage of JOHN GEORGE BARNARD and JANE EGGAR, late June 1822, at Rogate. He was of Skinner Street London, and she was the daughter of the late William Eggar of Durford Farm, Sussex.
This was his (at least) second marriage, so he would have been a widower.
If  someone could find out anything further I'd be most grateful.
Thanks.

Francesr,

Chris might not be able to attend to your query for the time being, but here's a little bit extra from the SMI.

Full date is 29 June 1822;
Jane's status is spinster otp;
John's widower status is confirmed, his parish St Sepulchre City of London;
Marriage by licence;
Witnesses are William Eggar (two with that name) and Sarah Callaway.

Unfortunately there's no record of the licence in the SMI.

Hi Stovepipe!
Thanks very much for this. Can I ask if you were reading this info off a typescript or the original? Any chance of finding out if Sarah Callaway might be "G"allaway? (ie. that it was mistranscribed.) Also the ages of John and Jane? - or perhaps these weren't included in 1822?
Thanks again.

Hi Francesr,

The SMI is the Sussex Marriage Index, a collection of various transcripts covering most marriages in Sussex for which records exist up to 1837.  I don't have access to the original register.  If the SMI had recorded ages I would have given them; I don't know if the original register has them, but the licence allegation might (if it exists).

Callaway is the spelling in the SMI, and to me seems a highly likely alternate form of Gallaway.

Good luck with your research.

Hi Stovepipe,
Just to thank you for this extra info and also for your thoughts on the C/Gallaway question.
