Hi Grantley

I wonder if it was short for Affidavit, I did a bit of googling and came up with this

http://www.devonheritage.org/Nonplace/Genealogy/BurialinWoollen.htm

Thankyou Ricky,

That explaination was totally unexpected.

That now leaves - where were they buried?

They would have been buried in Stokenham Parish Church's burial ground, and the affidavit would have been sworn that they were buried in wool (shrouded) per the Burial in Woollen Act. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burying_in_Woollen_Acts

Thankyou DOB7 for the extra explaination.

A have since found a transcript on http://www.foda.org.uk/main/projects/eighteenthcentury/stokenham/appendixa.htm stating Nath Shipherd bu 14 Jan 1715/6; wife Margaret bu 16 Mar 1714/5 at Ford.

I have also found a locality of Ford, 2.5km south of Chillington & 3km west of Beeson on the road to South Pool.

I am assumiing from that, Margaret was buried at the locality of Ford.

It would be nice to confirm what the XPC was short for.

Margaret would have been buried at Ford Chapel I think. Not sure about the XPC, but assume PC stands for Parish Church.
