Hi Danone

From the information you give, I am sure you have seen his record on Ancestry. Born: Leicester, and aged 36 when he enlisted in the Territorial RA in 1913? It says he had 7 years previous experience with the Leicester Regiment – they were infantry.

Your question is a bit vague. If you need any parts of the record interpreting please say so - but with 34 pages you need to give the Ancestry page number. You should also look at my answer today about service as a Regular under ‘11th Hussars’.

In Deacon’s case his Leicester Regiment papers will be in the section for men discharged between 1900 and 1913. Unfortunately no musters after about 1896 have been kept. But the Leicesters served in the Boer War so you may find him in the medal rolls on microfilm in Kew (WO100).

btw… he would have earned the British War Medal as well as the Victory Medal for WW1. They were issued together for service personnel.

Anything to do with something classified would either have been destroyed years ago or passed to the National Archives. If you cannot find it using the NA search - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp - you will never know. Although he was a middle aged man suffering from dizzy spells in 1919, so I cannot see what the government would have used him for. If you post the Ancestry page number I will have another look.

His WW1 papers give his number in the Leicester Regiment as 4709, and that he was discharged 2nd July 1903. They may mean transferred to the Army Reserve, as a Regular would normally not be discharged until he was about 30. Or he may have been in a Volunteer Battalion (the forerunner to the TF) or the Militia. If you cannot get to Kew you should post a question on the British Medal Forum in the hope that a member has printed off the Boer War medal roll for the Leicesters.

Likewise I would post a question on the Great War Forum about what  x''apark raf 16/6/1918 means, and give the location.
