Change from navy to army

Hi just need some clarification on a 4th generation grandfather born 1791 on the 1841 census he is down as Greenwich penisoner, however on his sons wedding certificate in 1859 he is down as corporal  R.a..? how can this be

Are you certain it says RA on the marriage certificate?  He could have been a Corporal in the Marines, which would have entitled him to a Greenwich rather than a Chelsea pension.  Marines were (and still are) ship-board soldiers trained to fight both at sea and on land  Have you checked the National Archives  http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/military/navy/rnstep1.htm catalogue  - they have on-line searchable database for Greenwich pensioners up to the first half of the 19th centuary.  Also, check the Trafalgar Ancestors on the same site as this gives details of ship they served on at Trafalfar.
