Sutherland.Robert,Tom,Alfred,Edith,&John.
« on: Saturday 27 June 09 01:51 UTC (UK) »

Parents were William and Mary Kay, both born abt 1850. The whole family was born in North Shields, and 1881 census places them at 12 Toll Square, but by 1891census had moved to Nigg, Aberdeen. Tom Simpson Sutherland was my grandfather. He was married to Margaret Campbell Tait, from Wick Caithness and died when my dad was very young. Little is known about him. I believe I have traced his birth registration, but cannot find his marriage cert, or death cert.
If anyone can help, or is connected to this family; I would love to hear from you.
Thanks, Jane.

Hi Jane and Ev  Smiley

Possible entry for Thomas in 1901:

Thomas Sutherland, 23, ship carpenter, lodger b. England at the Murray household
Address: 9 Inchgreen Street, Greenock East, Renfrewshire

His parents still show as living in Aberdeen in 1901.

Like you, I cannot find the marriage to Margaret C Tait on Scotlands People. Was your father born in Scotland? If so, his birth certificate should include the date and place of parents' marriage which would be worth you checking if you haven't already.

Hi Monica, Hi Ev.
Thankyou both for this information, I have been struggling with this puzzle , and it shouldn't be so hard except for the fact that my dad NEVER talked about his family ! He died this past Feb at 92 and I managed to scribble down some details from his birth cert. when his death was registered.Dad was born in No. Shields. All I had to go on was his mom's name ,his dad's name and occupation(ships engineer), the fact that his mom came from Wick, Caithness, and his dad (Thomas Simpson Sutherland) "supposedly" died when dad was about 7. That would be around 1923.
I have traced my grandmother's family using 'Scotlands People' with some success as they all came from the Caithness area, and am now stuck on a Sinclair name. However, even though I found Margaret's  birth cert. I cannot find either her death cert. or marriage cert. Nor can I find TOM's birth, marriage, death cert.etc etc. When I found his family in No. Shields I had some doubts as I was told they came from Aberdeen, but my census search up there confirmed the same family 10 years later !...boy , was I excited to find that part !!!

Monica, I do know that Thomas was a ship's engineer when my dad was born, so your 1901 entry may be correct.

Ev, does the source you found the possibilities on show details similar to those on Scottish registrations?

Thanks again. I certainly appreciate the help.
Jane.

Hi Jane

Certainly hard to find a trace on them at the moment  Undecided Your father's death is quite recent for you so my condolences to you.

I assume this was your father's birth entry:

Births 1st Qrt 1917 - Alistair T   Surtherland (mother's surname Tait) S.Shields 10a   1236

This is the only entry coming up on Freebmd with mother's surname as Tait.

What do you know about your father's early years? Did his family remain in North Shields after his father's death?

Thankyou for the condolence and Yes, this is correct. My dad was born Nov 1916. I copied the details before I came back to Canada.
The mystery surrounding my grandfather intrigues me ! He may have had something to do with the Merchant Navy, as I remember a story relating to this and his early death; he was the ship's engineer and caught a 'disease' while at sea.

Yes, my grandmother (Margaret) remained in South Shields after Tom's death. My father was an only child, and was sent to a church orphanage to grow up. His mom worked as a domestic and lived in with a family. Later on dad rented a house for her, again in S.Shields, and she died there when I was about 8 yrs old.(abt:1965 +/-)

Hi Jane

I've looked through the death indexes for 1963 - 67. The closest I can see is in the 1st Qrt of 1965:

Margaret C Sutherland, age 81, Northumberland S. ref: 1b/ 437

The typeface on the image for the index is not great so it would be great if someone else could check also the details. I also have little experience of registry districts/ areas for this part of the country  Tongue You might want to post on the Durham or Northumberland boards here on RC to see if someone else could check that entry and whether it would fit for South Shields.

I think the age for the entry above might be a bit light but sometimes ages reported can be slightly out.

Jane

I would imagine you have gone down the route of checking the church orphanage records if available to see whether any records of value remain.

Hi Monica.
I'm afraid I have no idea which orphanage my father was in. How do I check those types of records?
Your death index for Margaret is most likely correct. I will apply for the cert. and cross my fingers!... ta.

This is where you do need the experts on the area  Wink I would put a new post up on the Durham board here on RC www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,12.0.html

It also always helps if you put a link to any other relevant post such as this one here so you can copy and paste the URL for this thread www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,389287.0.html

Before ordering that DC I would also get someone to check the refs on that entry I found, as I said, image is a bit hazy.

Come back and let us know how you get on  Smiley

Jane, one last try on deaths. Something you said. Tried searching for deaths for just Tom Sutherland (rather than Thomas) ...and there it is:

Deaths 3rd Qrt 1924: Tom S Sutherland, 46, S.Shields    10a   699
