Robert and Janet (Ellis) Walker 1948
|
I am trying to confirm that Anna Jamieson, daughter of William Jamieson and Christian Cree, is the same Ann Jamieson that married Robert Ellis about 1824 in Biggar and lived in Cambusnethan after 1840. Here are the facts I currently have
ANNA JAMIESON, born 12 July 1802 in Biggar, Lanarkshire, to William Jamieson (born Stobo, Peebleshire 1776, died Biggar 12 Feb 1829, Weaver and later Weaver's Agent) and Christian (correct spelling) Cree (born 3 November 1783 in Biggar, died 17 Jul 1878, Biggar).
ANNIE JAMIESON, married Robert Ellis (born 21 Nov 1793, Lanark, died 18 Nov 1851) about 1824 in Biggar. They had 7 children born in Biggar, the first daughter named Christina, and 1 child born in Cambusnethan in 1844. Annie died 16 May 1868 in Cambusnethan. Her death record shows she was 65 and the daughter of JOHN Jamieson, Weavers Agent, and Christina Cree, deceased (Christian Cree died in 1878!!!).
All the facts point to Anna and Annie being the same person except for the two glaring errors? on the death certificate. I've gone as far as I can with searches on Scotlands People and the Mormon IGI. Can anyone suggest any other places to search or can anyone add any more details to the above?
Thanks, Davie

Hi Davie
How irritating for you You may well have one of those death certificates where the person who reported the death got things all mixed up. Does happen unfortunately.
Was Robert Ellis' father John?
If it is any consolation, there are at least half a dozen trees on this family on Ancestry and they have Annie's father as either John or William, in one case it is written up as "John or William"!
Regarding Christina, Ann's mother, they all show the same as you have with a death date of 1878,
Monica

Hi Monica,
Thanks for checking. Yes, Robert's father was John Ellis, b. Lanark 21 Nov 1753, and his mother was Margaret Hastie, b. Lanark 16 May 1756 (sources - Mormon IGI). Looks like I'm not the only one who's confused. I've saw a tree on Genes Reunited that also lists "John or William". Maybe the best chance of confirming is somehow discovering information on Robert and Annie's Marriage.

Davie, If it helps - the Cambusnethan burial register has Annie's parents as John Jamieson and Christina Cree. She was interred in the old churchyard (presumably with her husband) on 19th May 1868. The lair owners were Annie Jamieson and Richard Ellis. Also interred in that lair were - Robert Ellis aged 48 years - 4th Sept 1895. Elizabeth W E Telfer aged 2 years - 20th Oct 1881. Richard Ellis aged 60 years - 27th Feb 1891.
There are 2 other Ellis lairs there, both near to the above.
One was owned by James Ellis and Margaret Waugh. The other owned by John Ellis and Elizabeth Gardner.
There is a burial for Christina Scott, Wishaw, aged 52 years. Widow. Parents - Robert Ellis and Ann Jamieson. Interred in the private cemetery, lair 487, 18th June 1879. Also in that lair - Elizabeth Ellis, Bothwell, 20 months. Parents - Robert Ellis and Janet Muirfield. 2nd June 1880. Janet Ellis, housewife, Midcalder, aged 37 years, married. Parents - William Muirhead and Elizabeth Russell. 4/11/1890. Thomas Nicol Ellis, Shettleston, aged 5 weeks. Parents - Robert Ellis and Ann Nicol. 17th Dec 1891. John Ellis, Tollcross, aged 7 months. Parents - Robert Ellis and Ann Nicol. 3rd June 1893. Elizabeth Moffat Ellis, Shettleston, aged 11 months. Parents - robert Ellis and Ann Nicol. 11th Nov 1895. Annie Ellis, housewife, Coatbridge, aged 34 years, married. Parents - Thomas Nicol and Elizabeth Moffat. 22nd April 1899.
In the same private cemetery, lair 490 (so very near 487) Robert Ellis, scholar, Cambusnethan, aged 9 years. Parents - David Ellis and Barbara Brownlee. 17th June 1873.
There are a few more Ellis internments, mostly children of David Ellis and Barbara Brownlee, James Ellis and Margaret Waugh, John Ellis and Elizabeth Gardner. If you need them, just let me know.

Thanks Lodger,
The information above is very helpful. I have quite a few of them on my tree but there is a lot of new info there. Was Robert Ellis, interred 4th September 1895, definitely aged 48 years, not 58? - I have Annie's son Robert born about 1838 and I can't think what other Robert this may be. I would also be intrested in the other Ellis internments you mention. Could you please check if there is a Susan Young or Ellis buried in Cambusnethan, possibly between 1846 and 1856?

Hi Davie, I don't have any records for 1846 - 56, so can't look for Susan Young. The age of Robert may have been given or transcribed wrongly, the only way to check is to view the original death certificate and match-up his parents.
There is a plot in the old churchyard, a couple of graves away from Robert Ellis and Annie Jamison. The owners are listed as James Ellis and Margaret Waugh. The Day Book has 3 entries for these names. Christina Scott Ellis, aged 8 months, Cambusnethan. Parents - James Ellis and Margaret Waugh. Interred old churchyard 27th June 1866. Isabella Ellis, aged 4 years 6 months, Cambusnethan. Parents - James Ellis and Margaret Waugh. Interred old churchyard 26th March 1867. Annie Ellis, aged 16 years, Wishaw, single. Parents James Ellis and Margaret Waugh. Interred old churchyard 27th May 1873.
Another plot in the old churchyard, again very near to the other Ellis plots, this one owned by John Ellis and Elizabeth Gardner. The owners book lists 3 burials for this plot - Elizabeth Ellis aged 63 years - 10th March 1891. John Ellis aged 76 years - 6th Nov 1900. Christina Ellis (no age given) - 9th JUly 1932.
The Day Book has more of this family - all children of the above John and Elizabeth, all interred in the old churchyard and all resident in Cambusnethan village. Janet Ellis, aged 4 months - 14th Feb 1870. Archibald Ellis, aged 3 years - 19th Aug 1870. Margaret Ellis, aged 5 years - 15th Sept 1870. Christina S Ellis, aged 8 years - 8th Oct 1870.
(Scarlet Fever was rife in the area at that time)
Day Book entries - Annie Ellis Frew, aged 10 months, Wishaw. Parents - Robert K Frew and Elizabeth Ellis. Interred old churchyard 26th Sept 1877.
Robert Ellis, aged 11 months, Cambusnethan. Parents - David Ellis and Barbara Brownlee. Interred old churchyard 24th Aug 1863.
That's all I have.
Regards,
Lodger.
