Can't move on with my Amos family.
« on: Saturday 27 June 09 10:18 UTC (UK) »

I am at a total loss how to move on with my tree at the moment.
The earliest record I have is the marriage of John Amos &  Elizabeth Grey in St. John Lee in 1762.  John was born c1727 but I have not idea where. I have searched parish records for the area's surrounding St. John Lee without luck.
There were a lot of Amos' in the area especially the Elsdon and Simonburn parishes and I suspect there is a connection as the family christian names are all the same, Andrew, John, Elizabeth, Mary, William but I cannot find where this connection could be and am not sure how I will be able to do this if I do not find John's place of birth.
I have also located members at the Presbyterian Church at Birdhope Craig (Elsdon area) but the baptism records only start in 1728. Two late for me to locate John if he was baptised there.
I also suspect John may of been married before his marriage to Elizabeth as both were quite old when they wed and also because John lived in West Acomb in the mid/late 1700's and I have found a Francis Amos living there also. I have traced Francis' family on the census records and they continued they lived in the Holystone and Elsdon area.
Does anyone know how I can go about finding the birht place for John without going through every parish register in the country? I am at a total loss.
Sorry this is so long.
Thanks Erin.

Hi Erin

Maybe he came across the border - Elsdon in particular is not far from Roxburghshire and there is a baptism for a John Amos with father Andrew in Hobkirk, Rox in 1727 on the IGI.

Hi Ashley.
Thank you for this  Smiley
I have been looking at this birth, more so because Andrew was a tailor but am not quite certain yet.
Maybe I need a trip up to Roxburghshire. We've certainly got the weather for it.

Yes, I had noticed but over the years I have found my Ancestors spelt Amos, Amoss and Amis so it is worth looking at.
Thanks.
