AVG versus ZoneAlarm
« on: Saturday 27 June 09 10:51 UTC (UK) »

My husband's ZoneAlarm was due for renewal recently, but he decided to go for free AVG instead!!  Now he's getting plagued with scam e-mails purporting to be from Virginmedia (his internet provider).  He doesn't think there's a connection, but I have ZoneAlarm and use Virginmedia and haven't had any problems.

Anyone else struggling with AVG?  As far as I'm concerned you get what you pay for and if it's free, it can't be as good.

Lizzie,
I'm not a techie so my answer is just from my own experience- I chucked AVG and now use Avast free and it's very much more satisfactory- my pc ran slowly with AVG Free.  Also Avast Free upadtes itself automatically every day while I'm busy online- no problems at all - and it must be about a year since I switched.

As far as I'm aware, and I don't use either so I may be talking rubbish, I thought Zone Alarm was a firewall and AVG Free was antivirus, so if your husband only has AVG he may not currently have a firewall installed.

This might be the cause of his problems.

I did the same as Charlotte a few months ago (well nearly) I went to Comodo which was recommended me by our computer repair man.  AVG was far too slow and seemed to spend all its time updating and hogging up my computer.

I think though, that Zone Alarm is a different thing from AVG anyway isn't it, not sure AVG does that job as well

Kerry

PS Arrrr Roger has got in before and confirmed what I thought, yes ZA is a firewall.

Without wishing to re-open an old can of worms, after trialling all of the available free security app's, I now use the Comodo suite (AV and firewall), as well.

I've had no problems in the few months that I've been "connected".

Yes, Zone Alarm and AVG or Avast are different in function ... and on our pcs we  need a something in the both categories- antivirus and firewa, as I understand it.

Thanks for your replies, I'll tell my husband that he probably doesn't have Firewall protection now.

I have ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite, which has both Firewall and Antivirus/Anti-spyware monitoring.  It also has parental controls which I don't need and, if I was in USA, Identity Protection.  This doesn't seem to work in the UK, but I've not found that a problem.

Thanks Downside, I'll pass the info to my OH.  I'm happy to stay with ZoneAlarm myself.  I think my OH is waiting until my renewal is due and then he wants me to pay for a three computer package, rather than us having two single packages.
