Pescod/Peskett family of Winchester
« on: Saturday 27 June 09 12:50 BST (UK) »

I have a William Pescod or Peskett born c1704 at Winchester married to a Jane Harris probably sometime before 1737, which is when their daughter Jane was born, also at Winchester.

I am trying to find out who William's parents were and would be grateful for any assistance with this.

I am interested in  the surname Templeton that I noted at the bottom of your query.  That is a name that was attached to a gt aunt of mine from Ireland.

I've found the marriage.

William Pescod married Mrs Jane Harris 8 Feb 1727/8, Winchester Cathedral

No other information from the transcript, but at that date I would not expect it.  Parents' names were not recorded.

Mona Lisa

My ancestor is Agnes Templeton born c1846, daughter of Hugh Templeton who was born c1814 and died c1870 at Dublin, Ireland.  Any connection?

Little Nell

Thank you for this information.  A pity that Mrs Harris' parents are not listed on the transcript of her marriage to William Pescod as I am not sure of her own identity.

There is a marriage licence for Francis HARRIS of Winchester, husbandman, to Jane WOOLDERIDGE of St Maurice, at St M. Timsbury or Michelmersh 18 August 1826.  The bondsman was George WOOLDRIDGE, husbandman.

If this is your Jane it would mean a very short marriage.  Undecided

Hi Bearkat

Thank you for this - it looks as though Jane WOOLDERIDGE of St Maurice might be our gal but as you say a very short marriage!!!!

If this is correct I wonder what happened to poor old Francis?

Not necessarily.  At that date, the titles of Mr or Mrs were used for people of quality and in the case of a woman did not indicate that she had been married before.  She was probably a spinster.

I was not clear enough in my previous reply: prior to 1837, you do not get parents' names recorded in marriage records.  Prior to 1754, you get even less than between 1754 and 1837.  In 1727, all it might say is quite literally:

William Pescod and Jane Harris were married, with the date.  One line....so disappointing!

There are two burial records in Hampshire which mention Francis Harris and might be relevant:

Jane daughter of Francis buried 30 Jan 1730, St Peter Chesil
wife of Francis Harris buried 17 Sep 1732 Breamore.  Sadly she is not given a name.   Sad
No Francis Harris burial in Hampshire between 1726-1728

A Jane Harris was baptised in Winchester Cathedral 14 Jan 1706, parents Roger & Elizabeth.

That is slightly odd in that there are other children baptised around the same dates with the parents Roger and Sarah.  Undecided  I can't find a suitable marriage for either at the moment.
