Thanks Wendy,     Sounds to me as if Thomas is John in the 1871 census, lost his money so had to move?  Noticed the youngest child was born in Bristol.  James and Elizabeth Jane Wride married in Bristol.

I'm confused by your last message [Thomas is John?]

Do you mean James?

According to my research,  Thomas Gibbs & Patience are the parents of James Gibbs [or John, which I suspect is the wrong name, unless he was known as John. His age and birthplace are correct, and most of the children are correct in the 1871 Census].
He married Mary Dowling.
Their son is Charles Gibbs who married Elizabeth Jane Wride.

There is this death, which may be James.
