Edward and Isabella are living with Elizabeth Hackworth in St.Thomas Court in Newcastle in 1841. Both down as Hackworth instead of Hall. No sign of Nathaniel before 1854, no sign of Edward after 1851, so they could be the same person.
But this could be Edwards death. Stockton district in Sep qtr 1857 on FreeBMD, Edward Pearson Hall. Its the only Edward Hall death in Co. Durham in 1857. There is a burial of an Edward Hall, 14 July 1857, aged 27, Billingham St. Cuthbert. So the right age for being the Edward Pearson Hall, born 1830 in Newcastle.
Isabella, living in Newcastle with the older Nathaniel in 1861, has a son with her John N. Hall aged 7 born Middlesbrough. There is a birth of a John Nathaniel Hall in Stockton, Sep qtr 1853. So its possible that Edward and Isabella upped sticks together to Stockton area, in the early 1850's and only Isabella (and son) came back to Newcastle.

Hi Alan, that seems to put paid to my possible theory re Nathaniel. So, my next confusion is re Nathaniel snr being a butcher. 1841 he is an Agent ; 1851 he is a Commission Agent. 1861 he is a Cow Keeper which Cuthbert has been. Even though they are related occupations, you would think it just said Butcher or is that just me

hi alan the john n hall you refered to who was born in middlesborough is a john nathaniel hall son of thomas twizell hall and mary garbutt nee wilson i sent off for his birth cert to establish who was his parents,so isabella was his aunt and he is mentioned in nathaniel hall snrs will as his grandson.
i was thinking along the same lines as linda also, nathaniel in his marriage cert states father a butcher and even though nathaniel snr was indeed a butcher as he did do a apprentice as a butcher ..butchers guild apprentice record 298/56/138 ,but on all the census he doesnt seem to be working as a butcher,so would this suggest nathaniel jnr didnt have any contact with his father to know what his occupation was at the time of his marriage to catherine in 1854? im totally confued and i seem to be going round in circles this past year or so in trying to figure it out

He appears to have given up butchery before 1825 (assuming that there's not more than one Nathaniel Hall on the go in Newcastle at that time).
An advertisement from the Newcastle Courant, Saturday 27 August 1825. Entitled : Nathaniel Hall. Furnishing Iron Monger, Bigg Market, Newcastle. Begs leave to inform his friends and the public, that he has commenced business in the above line, in the second shop below the Turks Head Inn, and hopes, by strict attention to business, to merit a share of the public patronage and support.
Ties in with the location and trade of the Nathaniel, father of Elisabeth Hall Hackworth from 1829.
By 1830 on Edward Pearson Halls baptism he was a Victualler in the Cloth Market, which is next door to the Bigg Market, so he must have changed trades again.
Doesn't get you any closer to linking him to your Nathaniel though.
Alan.
