Puzzled about James BEER from Linkinhorne
« on: Saturday 27 June 09 17:00 UTC (UK) »

I wonder if anyone can solve my puzzle about my great, great, grandfather, James Beer.
I have traced him back from the 1901 census aged 41 living in Staveley Derbyshire with his wife Martha ( Churm ) and family, Fanny,George, James, Maud, Elsie and Lucy. It says he was born in Cornwall,Horn, Lincolnshire, England.
In 1891 it says he was born Morbal, Cornwall, and they had a Robert Chura age 55 living with them.
He married Martha Churm on Jan.11th 1886 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. ( free bmd )
In 1881 he is James Beer from Linkinhorne, and the family must have moved about as his sister was born in Stravon,Scotland.
In 1871 he appears as James Gam Beer from Linkinhorne.
In 1861 he is James Gumbe Beer.
Is this the same person, and was his father George Beer, born in 1835 in Calstock, or someone called Gumbe, or Gam?
Did George adopt James?
Any help is much appreciated,
Anne.

Hi Anne,

All looks pretty straightforward looking at the censuses.

Seems Gumb was his mother's maiden name:

Marriage Dec 1859 Liskeard 5c 148
George Beer to possibly Jane Gumb

It's not unusual to use mother's maiden names as middle names.

His birth was registered in the surname Beer:
James Gumb BEER Jun 1860 Liskeard 5c 62

The John Gumb living next door in 1861 seems to be Jane's brother.

HI Tati,
Thanks for clearing that up for me.
I feel such a fool for not looking up the marriage, but I am still feeling my way round, it's all new and confusing sometimes.
I don't always find what I'm looking for, or the results are contradicting.
Can I ask something else please?
Is the George Beer on the 1841 census born in Devon in 1835, his father.
I thought I had traced him but got to this census with one hundred names on, and what looks like some institution, I can't read, and I came to a standstill.

Hi Merryhow,
Thanks for your reply, I didn't know anything else about Mary, only what I found on the 1881 census.
I'm afraid I got carried away looking for James, I forgot about anyone else, till now.
I will be looking further into the family, now I have found the right people.
thanks again, Anne.

Is the George Beer on the 1841 census born in Devon in 1835, his father.
I'm really not sure! George's birth place seems to be consistently Calstock, although his birth year varies a lot.

1861: age 36 born Calstock (born ca. 1825)
1871: age 40 born Calstock (born ca. 1831)
1881: age 46 born Calstock (born ca. 1835)

His age at death in 1888 is recorded as 61 (born ca. 1827)

The best match I can find in 1841 is a 12 year old servant at Calstock. HO107/133/2 47 18

The only other people with surname Beer at Calstock in 1841 are a James age 45 (Ag lab), Mary 40, Eliza 10 and Richard 20. Possibly his family but who knows. You'd have to get hold of George's marriage certificate to Jane to check George's fathers' details.

Jane Gumb and sibling baptisms are all on the Linkinhorne Parish History site, done by the OPC.

The Calstock OPC records a baptism for George Beer to James and Mary Beer of Metherel on 15th July 1827. Those parents fit with the names Tati found in the 1841 census.

That's great, more than I ever expected to find.
Thanks to everyone for your replies and help.
It was the different ages of George that confused me, as Tati said.
I have recently paid a years subscription on ancestry.
I wish now I had paid for the premium and had access to more records.
It may have helped me to sort it out for myself, but then I would not have had the chance to ask such nice people as yourselves for help.
Thanks to Tati and Fizzybubble for taking me back to 1814.
I would never have got there without you. BIG SMILE.
Anne.

That is BRILLIANT.  My mothers surviving family will be over the moon, to know all this history.
Mum died of cancer when I was 15, she was 38.
Her mum died 1985, age 76. I think she had dementia.
Her dad died 1989, age 78.
My dad George Henry Siddall died in 2005, though I only found this out in March this year.
That is what set me on this journey.
I have traced the Siddall's back to 1760, and thought I'd try the Beer's.
The Siddall's were easier to find.
Thanks again, Anne.

If it's any comfort, I don't think it would have helped in this case, cg fan  Smiley
