1871 census lookup: LINDEN
« on: Monday 06 July 09 20:22 UTC (UK) »

Could someone try and find a census entry for a William Edward LINDEN who was born 24 Dec. 1867 (it might be as early as 1865). His marriage document states he was the son of William and Elizabeth, and born in Maidstone, Kent. I have searched a very long time and cannot find him in 1871 nor in 1881. By 1891 he had left for Canada and I have him after that. Many thanks.

Hi Nikkei

I know you'e got all this below but since we're clearly having trouble[(Cool no replies]  finding any trace whatsoever in England let alone Kent,  perhaps the following might help 'set the scene':

http://www.annebrooks.ca/getperson.php?personID=I5535&tree=6126
He married Nettie WILSON in Pictou County, Nova Scotia 9 Dec 1890 and his marriage cert. said his father, William was a Land Agent . William E.  LINDEN  was himself  listed as a Machinist by trade, age 24, b Co. Kent, England.  William Edward LINDEN died in New Glasgow, Pictou County, NS in 1930.

1890 Canada Marriage on 9 Dec 1890, stated he was 24.
1891 Canada Census 6 April - stated he was  age 24
1901 Canada Census 31 March -  stated he was age 35 & his dob as 24 Dec 1865. Immigration year 1889
1911 Canada Census 1 June - stated he was age 44 & born Dec 1866. Immigration year 1889.

Could I ask, where  'Maidstone' as a town of birth in Kent  came from? And if there was any further info on his parents from either a death cert. or an obituary in 1930?

The Immigration year of 1889, would apply to Canada only wouldn't it? I wonder if there is a possibility he and maybe even his parents etc first immigrated England to USA?

Can't find a thing! Illigitimacy or remarriage of a mother can both be reasons why a person doen't appear on BDM indexes or Census under the name we expect. If you search births of "William Edward" in all Kent between Dec Qtr 1864 and Dec Qtr 1868 - are there any with a surname that might mean anything to you?

Not sure why, but I've also seen many instances where a person has, upon immigrating to the Americas, sprouted a middle name which they never apparently had prior in the UK - sometimes employing the use of a mother's maiden name.

Cheers

Hello Ambly,

Thankyou for making a stab at this problem. The facts you gave about William LINDEN came from my own website and constitute almost everything I know about him. The fact of his birth being in Maidstone, Kent came from his son Frederick Clyde's birth certificate on which William was the informant. I find it curious that he has simply "appeared" from nowhere. I believe several years ago (but cannot reproduce it) I did find a census entry for a William LINTON (T not D) whom, if I remember correctly, was attending a school of some kind that I thought "might" have fit, but still don't think he was born in Maidstone, but perhaps somewhere in Kent.

I have been led to believe he emmigrated from England alone, but have no proof of that either. It is all rather strange isn't it.

Thanks for trying,
Anne

Further to this above, the death registration (which I just found this week) stated:

William Edward LINDEN, age 63, died 26 Oct 1930 at Washington St., New Glasgow, Pictou County. He was married, born Maidstone, Kent, England on 24 December 1867. Neither parents' names given, nor their places of birth. He had been a steel worker and had resided at his place of death for about 42 years; Informant: Mrs. Wm. E. LINDEN, wife; Burial at Riverside, 29 Oct 1930. Death attribued to cerebral hemmorhage.

Also, were they C of E or something else?

Cecil Roy was the first son; Clyde was Frederick Clyde. The daughter's names give no clues, nor are they out of the ordinary. William reportedly belonged to the Salvation Army. Quite a mystery, isn't it.
