Janet McGowan,
« on: Saturday 27 June 09 20:10 BST (UK) »

Janet McGowan, Domestic Servant, 32 King Street, Tradeston, Glasgow had a baby boy, John in the Poor House in 1866.
I can't find any trace of her or her child until he married in 1887, when he lived in Calder Street,Govanhill.  Janet was then deceased.
I am not very knowledgeable about searching in Scotland, so can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?  RosemaryJoan

Hi

What was his full date of birth?

There are a couple of Janet McGowan marriages in Lanark  on the IGI starting from March 1866

Robert Bain 19.3.1866
Hugh McKenna 16.9.1867
John Wemyss 1.12.1871

John's birth date was 12 June 1867 in Tradeston,Glasgow.  On his marriage certificate there is no father's name, just Janet McGowan, Domestic Servant, deceased, though I suppose she may have married.  I will have a look at those marriages.  Perhaps there might be some clues in the Poorhouse records, but not online.  RosemaryJoan

Hi RosemaryJoan

We did see the 1867 birth on the IGI, but had to confirm it, since you'd first said he was born 1866 -  so that would likely rule out a marriage of Janet to Robert BAIN in March 1866, anyway.

Could you tell us, what was John's occupation at time of his marriage and on 1891 / 1901 Census and did he state his pob as Tradeston in those 2 census?

Also,  would there be any clues in the names of the 2 witness' to the marriage?

Cheers

First of all, it did state 'illegitimate' on his birth record in City Poorhouse,Glasgow, district of Birth,Central Glasgow.
I can't find him in the 1891 or 1901 census, but here is the record of his marriage
11/1/1887 Free Church of Scotland,Govanhill
John McGowan, seaman, Merchant Service, aged 21 (he lied?) 53 Calder Street, Govanhill to
Frances Longmuir, 25 Carfin(?) Street,Govanhhill
Witnesses David Masson(?) and Isabella Brown
His mother was already dead by then and of course, I am trying to trace her origins.

Hi All

Possible 1891 entry for Frances, wife of John, in 1891:

Janet McGowan 1, b. Glasgow
Chas Dickson 25, boarder, b. Glasgow
Mary Ann Dickson 23, boarder, b. ireland

Address: 34 Cook St, Tradeston, Glasgow Govan

Many thanks Monica,  Yes that is them.  The next child, Charles was born in 34 Cook Street in 1902 and his father registered his birth.  Being in the Merchant Navy, he must have been at sea when both censuses were taken, but where was his mother in 1871 and 1881???
John was born in Tradeston, seems to have lived there for quite a while, so I would think that his mother, Janet couldn't have gone far.
Thank you ALL for your help - this is what Rootschat is all about!!
Can anyone point me to a map of the Glasgow area with these districts(Govanhill,Tradeston) marked on it Regards,RosemaryJoan

For a historical decription of Govanhill www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/towns/townhistory2507.html.

Not sure where you are based, but in your position I would follow up with possible poor relief application records for Janet McGowan leading to her time at the poorhouse and John's birth there. These are held at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow.

Can't easily see John as yet in 1871 or 1881  Undecided

Thanks Monica,  That map is just the job.  I can now understand all the districts.  Unfortunately I live in the South of England so would have to investigate the possibility of paid research in the Mitchell.  I am doing this for an old friend so she would have to foot the bill.  I will read the 'description' later.  Many many thanks.  RosemaryJoan

You might be fortunate and find that someone who is visiting the Mitchell is prepared to also look up details for John and mother Janet. Alternatively, you could try contacting the Mitchell direct and asking them what they would charge. I don't know what it will be but I understand this is reasonable. You have the date of John's birth which will help in searches.

Good luck with everything  Smiley

I have just been taking a closer look at John McGowan's birth record and noticed this comment on the left hand side of the page
It is hard to read, but looks like:
Dea.of Paternity,see Reg Cr. v.1.3 p.164
This looks like good news!
I have sent an email to Scotlands People asking them what I do next.  Ny other comments very welcome.

This looks to be a reference to the Register of Corrections (which will hopefully include father's name  Roll Eyes). If available, normally SP attach the entry from this register to the image ref. Was there a red button on the screen with the ref. to the RCE? If attached, I think it is one (or two?!) units to view it.

No, no sign of any red button.  It looks as if I will have to wait for Scotlands People to reply to my query.  RosemaryJoan
