The main thing that worries me now is finding an 1851 entry for the family with Janet in the household. If the entry you found in 1861 is her boarding in Calton and then Ambly's 1871 entry follows from there, the 1851 entry may be the only chance to see the family together.
Can't as yet see a death for Janet in her age range (c. 1847 +/-) between 1871-87.
And then we have the issue of where John may be for the 1881 entry. He could have joined by navy by then, the army took boys on from 14 I believe so maybe the merchant navy did too?

 Last pieces of the puzzle.....
Carol posted some marriages early on. Our Janet's was the last one from her list, to John Wemyss 1.12.1871.
From her marriage entry, her parents as we have (John, blacksmith and Catherine McDougall). Age 24 which matches that 1847 christening entry in the Gorbals to these parents.
Her address...189 Hill Street, Garnethill and a domestic servant  ...and Ambly's 1871 census entry!
This looks to be Janet and husband John in the 1881 census down in Lancashire. John Wemyss' father was John, so they could not use that name again given John's birth in 1867:

James Wemyss, 8, b. Scotland

And I just read your post Monica - woo!
What a great fit - even with the relevation the Janet you've uncovered was alive past 1887; as sad as it may be, it's possible 'our John' completely lost contact with his mother and simply didn't know if she was alive or dead when he himself married in 1887? Or worse, their relationship was not the best and she was "dead to him" regardless of if she was or not.

I think you are right about John disowning his mother, or not knowing where she was
I AM THRILLED SKINNY and so impressed at all of your skills. Do you all subscribe to some place where you can search the records free?? I have already spend about £30 on finding what little I have found on my own. Do you know, I looked at the Wemyss family earlier on but didn't go any further. What a great gang you are. I must now put this into some understandable order. Don't forget, I can help a little with N. Irish records. Here is my wee website - a bit amateur but it shows you a little of what I have done.
