"Completed"JAMES family Irene Place Prahran Melbourne Victoria
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 00:47 UTC (UK) »

Looking for information on James family of Irene Place Prahran Melbourne, Victoria. From oral history we know that my grandmother's mother was Agnes Mary James born 1860 and was the youngest daughter of  William James and his wife Elizabeth Gardner.
We were told Agnes had a good education (University?), she tutored in accounting, and sang Opera. She married George Edward Corfield in Brisbane 8/10/1886 and travelled through out South East Queensland, finally living in Imbil, she was buried in the Gympie cemetery 1923. The family had  broken up after Elizabeth Gardner had died and her husband William had remarried. His second wife(name unknown) had 2 sons William and Norman, not sure if they were not from a previous marriage.
The name James is a hard one to track down. I have found a marriage between a Elizabeth Gardner and a William Jams (not James) in 1837 in Banbury  England in Free BDM. My grandmother said her mother's siblings were Charles (he had 2 children Alfred and Ruth), Elizabeth (no children)and  Lucy. The eldest son use to look after Irene Place until the second wife family took it over.  I am getting lost in all the James's and am not sure if the family stories were all accurate. Does any one have any information on this family?

Like you the only marriage I could find was this one

GARDNER Elizabeth  Banbury    16/4
JAMS William     Banbury    16/4

The 1851 census was taken on 31st March.  This appears to be the family but the ages do not match the shipping records. However the childrens' births are in the same order and the years between the births are identical.  John the 2nd child on the shipping record is not on the census.

The place of birth for William JAMES is identical however, to the place of birth for his 2nd marriage to Elizabeth WEIR.

1851 Census  HO107/1725/562/46
Living At Couching Street, Watlington, Oxfordshire
JAMES William  Head Married  37 years  General dealer  b. Earls Barton, Northamptonshire
JAMES Elizabeth Wife Married 34 years b. Banbury, Oxfordshire
JAMES Charles  Son  7 years   b. Watlington, Oxfordshire
JAMES Elizabeth  Dau   5 years b. Watlington, Oxfordshire
JAMES Lucy  Dau    3 years  b. Watlington, Oxfordshire
JAMES Richard Son   2 years  b. Watlington, Oxfordshire
JAMES Mary Dau    11 months  b. Watlington, Oxfordshire

*Women were not admitted to Melbourne University until 1881 and even then their admissions were confined to the arts.  By 1887 they were admitted to medicine.

*Death of Elizabeth GARDNER

JAMES Elizabeth
Father Gardner Robert
Mother Elizabeth UNKNOWN
51 years  Born England  1869  Reg#4517

and possible birth although the year of birth is slightly out...then her age on the death cert may be incorrect as well.  Extracted record.
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

GARDNER Elizabeth
Baptism 13 Oct 1816      Banbury, Oxford, England
Father  Robert GARDNER
Mother Hannah

Have given you  Wm's 2nd marriage reg and birth of two children.

I cannot find William JAMES in any Melbourne Directories from 1857 to 1884 nor a reference to what you seem  to be referring to as a property/home.  Irene Place is a street in Prahran that runs between Errol Street and Williams Road.  Just google maps with the address.

Quote
The eldest son use to look after Irene Place until the second wife family took it over.

Surely his 2nd wife Elizabeth WEIR and family [they had two sons] were William JAMES' family as well.

It would be interesting to see the address used by William JAMES on his marriage certificate in 1882.

Australian Electoral Rolls

CORFIELD Agnes Mary  Maryborough  Domestic duties
CORFIELD George Edward  Maryborough  Accountant

Although we have not yet found the death of WILLIAM JAMES, I think that his Will is digitised on
 http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/Index_search.asp?searchid=54

He appears to have died 24/2/1898 nd was a wealthy land-holding man with property worth 6000 pounds.

If it is our man, he lived at 150 Williams Rd Prahran and held other land in the immediate vicinity.

"ALICE JAMES", (who was a daughter of our  WILLIAM JAMES) is trusted with distribution and some parts of his land have been already given to his wif eELIZABETH.

ADDING.  If you look at the map reference which Cando has given you will see the number 150 WILLIAMS RD. is on the corner of Williams Rd and IRENE PLACE.

Agnes's husband is George Edward Corfield(Born.1859) my mistake.Thank you for your research and responses. The information clarifies alot of what my grandmother told me in the 1980's, She passed away in 1989 at the age of 94 and it is only
the last few years have I started to sort through the information given to me and start to complie the family history. I realise, now, that I should have asked more questions. One extra thing, which I do not know if it possible to research, we were told  that Agnes James sang at the opening of the Malvern City Hall.
