MAPCO Website : Free High Quality Berkshire Map Online
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 07:07 BST (UK) »

Hello All.

I am writing to introduce a free online map website, designed to assist family historians.

For those who are not familiar with the website, it is:

MAPCO : Map And Plan Collection Online
http://archivemaps.com

Of particular interest to Berkshire researchers will be:

A Map Of Windsor Forest And Its Vicinity 1823, by Henry Walter.
Engraved By J. Dower. New Edition revised and corrected by Alfred E. Harrison and published by J. B. Brown, Windsor, and James Wyld. 1856.
http://archivemaps.com/mapco/windsor1856/windsor1856.htm

This beautiful hand coloured 19th century map of Berkshire, dissected and mounted on linen, is highly detailed and shows the Parishes of east Berkshire in the vicinity of Windsor Forest. The map clearly shows all of the Parish boundaries, with field boundaries delineated and labelled with owners names. The map is displayed at a very high resolution, and is an invaluable resource for local history and family history research in eastern Berkshire.

Enjoy!

** About MAPCO **

The MAPCO website is a philanthropical project, designed to raise awareness and appreciation of history using old maps and photographs. The website displays many high quality historical maps and views, with an emphasis on London, U.K., and Australia. The MAPCO website is a free access site, and will remain so.

This site is intended primarily as a research aid for genealogical and historical researchers. The maps, prints and views on the MAPCO website are displayed free of charge for the use of students, historians and genealogists, to assist with heritage and family history research.

There are currently has 41 high quality maps of London, and 9 maps of the British Isles.

The site is regularly reviewed in the U.K. press and historical/family history magazines, and the National Library of Australia has recognised the website as a digital resource of cultural significance, and now archive the site annually for posterity. I am solely responsible for the entire administration of the site; that is, and I do all of the scanning, digital image work, and web page design, and financial administration.

The MAPCO website is updated regularly, with new maps being displayed every month. Check back regularly to see what has been added.

I do hope that you find this site useful and informative. Enjoy the MAPCO website. It is free!

Kind regards,

David Hale,
Adelaide,
South Australia.
