Disappearing family after 1867
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 10:00 BST (UK) »

Henry Luke, (formerly, Heinrich Luch) his wife Elizabeth with three surviving children, Goodhart William, Rosa and Elizabeth are known (from Elizabeths birth/baptism) to be running a coffee shop in 30 Brick Lane, E1 in 1867. Heinrich and Elizabeth came to London from Hesse in Germany c 1858; the three children were all born in Whitechapel in 1860, 1864 and 1867and I have their baptisms from German Lutheran Church, Alie Street. I cannot find them anywhere in 1871 or indeed any later census other than for Goodhart who is on 1881, 91, 01 and11. Elizabeth Luke appears as a witness at his marriage in 1885 but dont know whether sister or mother. Elizabeth (mother) born 1836 Giessen, Henry c1837 Schmitten.
Because the family changed spelling of name, I thought I had found them as Leek, Leck, Luck and Lack but have since discovered this to be a different family with similar parental names and German origins, having sent for birth certs.
Could they have moved from UK? have looked at various passenger lists but nothing.Where next?

If that census is correct then why is head of house shown as

Jas Luke 23 NK against occupation
Elizabeth 24
Goodhart W aged 2
There is nothing against place of birth except above this address it states Hamburg,
Unless I am mistaken I thought Elizabeth's husband was Henry ?, am I confused ??
I can't find anymore about them, mainly being the confusion of surnames

Good Luck

The Jas I think may stand for Johannes Heinrich.  The enumerator was not exactly detailed in his responses and didnt even bother to record origins/occupations of rest of inhabitants so I dont think Hamburg applies to Goodhart's parents. German people are apparently often known by middle name and Johannes was Heinrich's father's name. I have Goodhart's birth cert and baptism from 1860 which clearly shows father as Heinrich (Henry) and mother as Elizabetha (Elizabeth) as they also appear on all the subsequent children's baptisms up to 1867. I think the confusion is the enumerator's not the family's on this occasion but accept that the ambiguity doesnt help. Thanks

I stand to be corrected here but I thought I would look up Little White Lion Place on my 1871 Cd's, thinking I would look to see who was at that address as at 1871, I cannot find it listed, sorry, I will try to find out, it might well have been renamed unless it is under elsewhere

I think the family are more likely to be in Whitechapel area if anywhere as all the addresses of baptisms in 1860 till 1867 are in that area. From 1864 the family are at Brick Lane till 1867. Even Goodhart's birth in 1860 is in Whitechapel at 16 Commercial Street so I think the St Giles (White Lion Place) one at time of 1861 census was very transitory.
