Hello all,
Cutting to the chase as they say, I have my GG Grandfather, Henry FLINT (I will call him Henry no.1) marrying a Sarah FROST in Ashover Parish (Derbyshire, England) in 1806. The other records I have consulted point to 'my' Henry FLINT being baptised on the 5th December 1769, again in Ashover. Whether this was in Ashover Church, or in the Chapelry of Dethick (sometimes spelt Dethwick) I am not sure, as Dethick was, at that time part of the Parish of Ashover.
The IGI and Ancestry seem to point to the fact of his parents being, once again, Henry FLINT (I will call him Henry no. 2) and his mother Mary (no surname stated).
I have tried to check the Ashover and Dethick Regsisters but there are numerous Henry FLINT's, so having been led to check out Henry (no. 2.) I am now stuck. Where do I go from here. I have seen something, I can't remember when or where, that Henry (no. 2's) wife was a Mary HODGKINSON, so that may or may not be the case.
I have looked and looked at the PR's but really I'm just going round in circles. Looking at the film of the PR's is not easy, although I am obviously very willing to continue doing that, but can anyone give me advice on what the best thing to do is? Especially, as there are so many Henry's. If I do eventually find Henry no. 2, I guess the problem starts all over again. What other records are there likely to be that I can check?
Yours Hopefully,
Alan

So far as I know Dethick records are all at Ashover, Dethick was a private family chapel

Alan, unless there are two Dethicks this is the one I thought of, not near Ashover though. It does however have this website, contains Flints from 1774 onwards, so may help, unless you are the author ?

Hi Alan
I don't have any experience with Dethick/Ashover so can't guide you there. However when I have faced similar situations with an abundance of people of similar names in a parish, I usually tend to put my personal interest in one of them to one side for a while, and try to build a tree for all of them (as in most cases they are all related, or at worst might belong to two or three distinct families). This would mean extracting all the FLINT entries from the register first, along with perhaps finding any wills that exist for FLINTs from there. Having done that, it _may_ be easier to start the earliest ones and work forwards, rather than working backwards as we normally do when tracing a single line.
By the way - if in doing so, you come across a John Flint, who married a woman called Grace, then disappeared from the area just prior to 1722 (when he appeared in Tideswell), I'd be extremely grateful to hear about him
Cheers Mark
