Hi
I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out if this address was anything more than a private residence, only the name 'Toll gate house' doesn't sound like any ordinary address? This is in the Brixworth RD in the parish of chapel brampton
Thanks in advance

Posty, You don't say when this address was used.
My guess would be that this was the residence of the toll collector from the days when road tolls were collected from coaches using the road. As traffic came at all hours, the toll collector lived on the job- literally... hence the name of this dwelling. Originally the house would have been owned by whoever had the right to collect the toll money and later it probably got sold and became a private dwelling. So it depends what time period interests you.

Hi Charlotte
The year of the census for Toll Gate House was 1871, so this might have been the right type of era.
Thanks

Hi All
Posty I have just been to Brampton(Chapel) to the Pitsford and Lamport Railway, on the way back I went around the village.
I used to go to Chapel Brampton School when I was young so know it quite well.
Although a lot of the houses still standing on the main street date from late 1700's upwards I could not see one called the Toll Gate House.

Hi Sandy
Thanks for your reply, it's a shame you didn't find a house with the name Tol Gate House, maybe it has changed it's name for a number or maybe been knocked down.

Posty, The Local Studies Library nearest to where the Tokk House is/ was might know somethi g of its history-- and maybe even have an old pic of it.
Worth emailing them to ask.

Hi again Posty.
I never thought to look at a book I have by Jack Wagstaff who I met in 1984 when we were in a Local History Group.
I would have found out that the cottage was demolished in 1958.
Other information was that the toll-collector's appointment was usually let for periods of three years.
The last "Pikeman" at this toll gate was Richard Barber in 1871, hence his move elsewhere.
On November 1st 1872 were opened permanently and the road became offically "disturnpiked".
It was used as a private dwelling until it was demolished.

Sandy, You certainly produced some interesting info there...right on posty's questions. Wonder why the house was demolished? Widening the road perhaps?

Hi Sandy
Thanks for the info once again, the Richard Barber that you mentioned in 1871 could be my ancestor, reason i say could be is...my gggrandad (William Thomas Smith) married a Mary Francis Barber, she died 1902 and he married her sister, Kate, a year later, Mary and Kate's father was Richard. The only thing is William had a son called George John(my ggrandad), as well as other sons, and i don't know if Mary was his mother, as i know William was married 3 times. If Mary was his mother then Richard Barber was my 3xggrandad. Hope i haven't confused you too much.

Hi Charlotte/Posty
Charlotte I don't think it was demolished for widening the road, more than likely just fell into dis-repair.
Posty I looked in the Local Studies for you yesterday to see if a photograph still existed, to no avail, which is proably why Jack did not seem to have one either.
I know it would be brilliant if you can find the connection through your family lineage back to Richard being a gt (etc) grandfather through one of William's wives.
