Complete: Twickenham Dairy
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 10:02 UTC (UK) »

Is anyone with access to Surrey Directories able to find a dairy in Twickenham in about 1876 and if so whether the manager's name is given? I believe that a S.B.Foss was running a dairy there at that time but have never found any evidence. Alternatively are there any electoral rolls which might yield something? [ He is not to be found in Twickenham for the 1871 & 1881 censuses.]
        Many thanks, Toby Webb

Have you tried the Historical Directories for the Dairy?

Hi Celia.
I was not quite lucky enough with the dates of the Middx. directories. However I did not know of this site and I am sure it will help me in other investigations. Many thanks, Toby.

I presume that you looked in the1874 Post Office Directory for Middlesex on that site.  Having quickly run through the commercial section for Twickenham I did not come across any dairies although I may have missed one.  What is significant is the number of cow keepers listed which would seem to indicated that milk production and delivery was still very much an enterprise carried out by individuals and Twickenham was still very much a self sufficient small town.

Hi David,
Thanks for your contribution. Very much my own conclusions after using that particular directory. Samuel Beart FOSS was probably only a very few years in Twickenham having married in Dorset in 1876 before appearing in Wanborough, Wilts in 1879 as a dairyman ( birth cert. source). Clearly always the entrepreneur, he became a coffee house manager by 1881.

Hi Jane,
Thanks for that idea. I must see what they have at the record office in Richmond for I believe that is where Twickenham items are kept.

Hi Jane,
            HANWORTH DAIRY.
I know it's a few years ago, but do you recall anything about where this dairy was? Quite possibly no longer about but worth a look.

Hi Jane,
Had a look at the site but unfortunately not so interesting as the oldest part is only from the 1930's. For the record it was Job's Dairy at one time.It could however still be the dairy I am looking for. Richmond next stop.
For other browsers here are the cows.
Thanks for your effort Jane. Can't win everthing. Toby.

It was Jobs dairy when I visited in the 60's - looks as though it's been around a while

Rosie.
Very interesting bit of local history. I could not open your recommended site however and so had to find it another way. Now I see why. Your name had become part of the www address. You may be able to modify your posting which would be good for it is a most interesting file which I am sure others will enjoy. Toby.
