Well with a name like Tubbs you can't help but do research...always get carried away when I have a rare name..cause searching for them is sooo much easier!
Francis Tubbs is one of 16 brothers and sisters and I have all the census returns for the other 15, just couldn't find anything on Francis.....he was really bugging me 
Would absolutely love to know what happened to him...wonder if I ever will, there doesn't seem to be fantastic record keeping when it comes to prisoners...

Hi,
I have been checking the Victorian records and noted the Francis THORNTON Tubbs aka Banfield in them. No birth for a Francis THORNTON Banfield/Bamfield/Tubbs in Free BMD that can be definitley the man we are looking for.
I also noted an Edward THORNTON Tubbs whose birth can be found in Shorditch 1850. in Free BMD certainly the right age to be your Fancis' son.
I will PM you with the information from Victorian records that makes me think that Francis THORNTON TUBBS/Banfield is EDWARD THORTON TUBBS' STEPSON.
but there is this tantalising marriage Sep quarter 1873
DARLING Julia Maude London C. 1c 167
Tubbs Frank Thornton London City 1c 167
which seems to be the only Tubbs Darling marriage on Free BMD.

can't pin down Frederick or Francis as children to either couple but I strongly suspect that Frederick James BANFIELD/Edward Thornton TUBBS/Frank Thornton TUBBS are the one person!!!

Thanks for the extra info on the Victorian Tubbs'....not sure if they are anything to do with my lot yet but will see.
I have sorted them out a bit and this is my theory:
Frederick James Banfield married Levina Darling 1867 (FreeBMD)
had the following children:
Frederick Banfield ~ 1871
Frank Thornton Banfield ~1874
Frederick James Banfield died 1875 St Saviour Southwark (FreeBMD) aged 30yrs
Lavina Bamfield (widow) married Edward Thornton Tubbs 1875 St Saviour Southwark (FreeBMD)
Edward and Lavina had:
Lilly Thornton Tubbs 1876 St Saviour Southwark (FreeBMD)
The family emigrated to Australia in 1877 as per your notes
Edward and Lavina had in Victoria:
Maud(e) Tubbs 1878 (mother Lavinia was using her maiden name on certificate)
Richard Albert Tubbs 1880 (ditto)
Arthur Archie Tubbs 1881 (ditto)
So Lavina had 2 children to her first husband Frederick James Banfield then 4 with her second husband Edward Thornton Tubbs.
I think that Francis "Frank" Thornton Tubbs and Julia Maud Darling married 1873 are another couple
I think that Julia Maud is Lavinia's sister and that Julia married into the Tubbs clan first (hence Lavina named her second son after her brother-in-law), and that when Lavinia was widowed she married Frank Thornton Tubbs's brother (or relative) Edward Thornton Tubbs.....
I think that they also came to Australia (shipping yet to be found) and had a child (Vera) in 1886 in Victoria.
So all above board here 
Edward Thornton Tubbs appears to be the son of Harry Tubbs....so can't see a connection to my lot yet.....but I won't discount anything at this point!

Parents:

Mother: ELIZABETH CHARLOTTE
So they were brothers

Julia Maude Darling
Birth: 20 AUG 1849
Christening: 11 OCT 1872 Saint Mary, Saint Marylebone, London, England
Parents:
Father: JOHN DARLING
Mother: ANN
Couldn't find Lavinia Darling, but perhaps she wasn't christened as it seems that Julia was baptised aged 23yrs.

Cannot see him on any other census but it may be mistranscribed.

Emily 20, Adeline 15, Julia 11, Caroline and Ann both 9, Alice 11months. Happy to post details if you need them
Can't see this family (except for Alice in 1881 see above) on any other census.
