I  just contacted  the funeral directors again  and sadly  no  further information  was available.

He is not listed on  the Electoral  Rolls  for Victoria.

It was not complusory  to  vote at  that time I  feel  sure.

We shall just have to wait and see if  the Provice record holds anything further to definately say it is  your man,  but everything else seems to verify it.

Just adding this for Reply 6# & 7#.

The passenger on the ship Orwell 1870 -  was definitely Edmund DAVIS. The writing was quite clear, so not mistranscribed.

This is the Unassisted passenger record referred to and the ship arrived in Melbourne from New Zealand.

http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=23

EDMUND David 18 years arrived in October 1861 on the Aldinga from Port N = New Zealand  Fiche 022 Pge 004

The following info indicates that the Aldinga did not sail on international routes.  Perhaps a search of outward passenger records in New Zealand to see if this record has been mistranscribed.

ALDINGA (1). 423 gross tons, 291 net. Iron steamship, 2 funnels and rigged as a 3 masted barque. Built 1860 by Scott of Greenoch for McMeckan, Blackwood & Co in partnership with S White of Aldinga, Adelaide and J Darwent also of Adelaide. Modified 1862 Lbd: 202'6" x 24'6" x 13'4" with tonnage increased to 446 gross. Worked the Tasman run and Otago. 1871 fully owned by McMeckan, Blackwood & Co. Altered during 1887 with with passenger accomodation removed as well as one funnel and and two masts. Sold August 1877 to Adelaide Steamship Co. Laid up until 1883 then placed on collier run when purchased by E Vickery who traded as the Mount Kembla Coal Co., of Sydney. Wrecked Bellambi reef January 23rd 1896
