Stanground - Steels family
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 14:37 UTC (UK) »

I'm loooking for the family of Stephen Steels born Stanground around 1809.  He married Susan (Susanna) around 1830.  She was from Dogsthorpe so could have been married there?

Can anyone help me with this please, much appreciated, Jane.

There's no marriage on Hunts Marriage Index. Dogsthorpe was a hamlet of St John the Baptist, Peterborough, Northants, so you might get a result if you posted on the Northants board asking for a look up request on Northants Marriage Index.

There was a Stephen Steel married Elizabeth Tolton in 1806 at Stanground who might be connected

Stanground baptisms aren't on the IGI or the BVRI, nor is a transcript available from Hunts FHS. But the parish register has been filmed by the LDS so is available to order and view at your nearest Family History Centre of the LDS

He married Susan Pepper in Stanground in 1829. Stephen Steel and Elizabeth Tolton were the grandparents of the Stephen you are enquiring after. How are you related to the Steels?

Welcome to Rootschat

Jane's request on the Northants board gives the marriage as being at Peterborough St John, Northants, not Stanground, on 30 Aug 1829 - see http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,389592.msg2613789.html#msg2613789. Which is why I couldn't find the marriage in Hunts Marriaghe Index

It seems very quick for someone marrying in 1806 to have a grandson marrying in 1829. Are you sure they weren't his parents?

You're quite right David.  Senior moment, I did mean parents. Although the grandparents were also called Stephen & Elizabeth, just to cause confusion. The marriage record in Peterborough  has made me look at my notes again. Unfortunately someone else gave me the information about the marriage being in St John the Baptist, Stanground, so I didn't have a reference for the original source. Just goes to show how important it is to check and note sources.

Many thanks.
