Cap Badge-Which Light Infantry Regiment and What Year?
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 16:03 BST (UK) »

Good afternoon Board

A kind soul on a regiment specific board identified my grandfather, Thomas Herbert Williamson, as a 2nd Lieutenant in a Light Infantry regiment but I don't know which one.  I suspect the Oxfordshire & Bucks Light Infantry with my zero knowledge of service matters but there is no family connection to that part of the country as this side of my family are all from Manchester or Stockport.

My grandfather was born in 1900 but I can't find a Thomas Herbert Williamson in a Light Infantry on the WWI medal index on A**y, does this mean that this photograph was taken after 1918/19?  What year does it look as though it was taken in.  Also what does the "C" on his lapel indicate?

Last question, is there a way of getting his service number, there is a number on each of the photographs (39894 and 39896_ but I think they are just photo references as they don't bring the correct person up on the medal roll.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Jules

I'm fairly sure that the Ox & Bucks are unique in that they are the only Light Infantry using the Jaeger / Hunting Horn badge with no number or letters on it - like your photo.

Couple of suggestions for the 'C'.....first being Chaplain, second being Cadet, neither of which seem that relevant to your guy!

I think officers had to be more flexible regarding posting, so Ox & Bucks wouldn't be a surprise.

Pete.

The buttons on his tunic look to be vulcanised rubber, which I think dates it to the period 1909 - 1919.

I dont suppose he went to University in Oxford? They had an OTC, but the badge had OTC on it, but possibly moved from there to the regulars as a cadet.

Could do with someone checking the Army List for you, I dont have them unfortunately.

Hello Jules,

I agree with Peter that he's Ox & Bucks.

I've tried searching the London Gazette, (up to 1930), but drawn a blank so far, I'm afraid.

Hi Jules
Unless he was commisioned from the ranks then its doubtful he had a service number.
If he was born 1900 he may have missed active service during wartime thus no medal index card he may have been in UK only

Have you tried the Great War Forum?
http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/
Lots of experts there who might know about the 'C' collar badge.  The rank badges worn on the cuff probably mean WW1 period - they were moved to the shoulder during or soon afterwards.
Chaplains wore different badges, not those of the regiment to which they were attached.

Hello all and thank you for your responses.

I'm not sure if my grandfather went to the University of Oxford - I'm still discovering things about him but it's painstaking as both my father and my grandmother (Thomas Herbert's wife) are dead and I have no paternal aunts or uncles.  My father lost touch with his great aunts and uncles, most of whom would be dead by now anyway.  Thomas Herbert Williamson himself died in 1970, before I was even born.

Thank you for confirming the Ox & Bucks regiment and I highly doubt that he would have been commissioned from ranks given his age, if indeed this photo dates before 1920 as the vulcanised rubber buttons suggest (oh how I'm learning!  Wink)

Please could someone tell me what the Army List is, what information would it give me and where would be best to request a lookup?

My DH had an idea - maybe he was conscripted as an officer but been conscripted too late to serve and hence no medal index card.  His birthday was July 1900 so this could be plausible.

I will ask on the 1914-1918 forum about the "C" badge.

Thank you all again so far for your kind help.
