Date required please
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 17:27 UTC (UK) »

An aunt had this photo in her album but couldn't put a name to the man, a date might help us.
The dark eyes  Cool and receding hairline have been passed down the generations so we are convinced that he is 'one of ours'

Men are really hard to date but this looks fairly modern. What's printed on the back?

Sorry China,
The photo had been cut down to fit a frame, there was nothing on the back. The favourite candidate died 1933 aged 69, I estimate that the guy in the photo looks 40 ish which puts the date back to 1904.
What did you mean by 'fairly modern' ?

I'm no expert, but it has a 1920s or even 1930s look about it to me.

Well, by "fairly modern" I had in mind the 1900s. It could be 1904ish or even 1920ish...

You need Old Rowley, he's really good at men's fashions as well as being the Rootschat Dating Oracle Cheesy You might PM him.

Hi Dave,

I would agree with China on both points that she makes. Firstly it can be very difficult to give an accurate date to images with men in them even more when the style of clothing that they are shown to be wearing may have been in fashion years before the image was taken or a style which would last for a decade or more, which could well be the case in this instance.

Stand and fall collars had been in fashion for quite a while prior to this gent being snapped with styles such as the University, the Clarendon, the Admiral and the Piccadilly all being fashionable. In 1894 a style of collar was introduced and was sold in competition of the Piccadilly. The Rosebery had a high back and pointed in the front but instead of the tips of the wings ending in a point this collar had tips that were rounded.

For many years the four in hand knot on a necktie had been fashionable, however sometime in 1901/1902 a new knot was introduced into men's fashion which men would be wearing for years to come, which I believe to be in the picture shown. The knot is similar to a four in hand but not as big, nor as flat, and is also similar to the later Windsor Knot and the much later Pratt knot.

The colouration/ design on the tie is also important to note as in the main it was plain colours that were worn up to the 1900's however after this date striped ties started to slowly creep into fashion (they had already been introduced into fashion with the striped design on cravats abroad) but they were slow to take off as sober ties were still being worn in the UK.  A change in men's fashion came after the 1st world war with the striped design becoming more common and in the late 1920's onwards, going towards the '40's, a pin was used behind the knot to draw the opening of the collar into the knot.

I can not see anything else that may give an idea for exactly when this image was taken and would again agree with China that it could have been taken any time between 1902 and 1920 but because of the way the photograph has been taken (possibly with a box brownie) with the subject full in the frame from the waist up I would suggest a date closer to the 1920 date given.  Sorry that I can not give much help on this one as much as I would like to have.

What a terrific explanation and breakdown of mens fasions in the late 1800's / early 1900's. I'm very impressed in fact I'm going to cut and paste the reply along with the photo.
Thanks to all of you for taking the time to reply
